Primary Purpose
The ESL Instructional Aide Position enhances the educational process and potential of LEP students. The ESL Instructional Aide works with certified ESL staff and building-level administrators to assist with daily educational tasks as assigned by the Federal Programs Supervisor. Persons must be able to adapt to performing a variety of duties, accept direction, control, and planning of an activity, work with students within, and make decisions based on sensory or judgment.
The ESL Instructional Aide must have the following:

a)     Minimum of a high school education or the equivalent as determined by the General 

Education Development Test (GED)and 48 Semester hours of college work obtained from an accredited institution of higher education; or 

b)     Associate’s degree or higher obtained from an accredited institution of higher education; or 

c)     High School Diploma or equivalent and pass a state-approved Para Pro Assessment; or 

d)    High School Diploma or equivalent and show demonstrable proficiency in reading and writing skills (take/pass the MCS Educational Assistant Assessment)

In performing the primary function and essential duties of this position, confidentiality must be maintained at all times.
Primary Functions and Essential Duties:

  • Assist Teacher in ESL classroom functions such as lesson materials, room preparation and tidiness, and student records.
  • Conduct small group instruction under the direction of the ESL teacher.
  • Help provide a well-organized, efficient classroom environment.
  • Maintain and follow through disciplinary procedures, including classroom, school, and district policies, according to individual teacher’s plans and the child’s ILP as needed.
  • Follow specific directions with initiative, flexibility, and motivation while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.
  • Obtain other certifications and training as required by State Department of Education or the McMinn County School system.
  • Assist in gathering information for ILP creation and/or implementation.
  • Provide supplemental instruction to ELLs under the direction of a classroom or ESL teacher.
  • Follow direction with initiative, flexibility, and motivation.
  • Maintain a rotating school schedule as assigned.
  • Obtain other certifications and training as required by State Department of Education or the McMinn County School System.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation of all services provided to students.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Federal Programs Supervisor, teacher, principal, or the Director of the McMinn County Board of Education.

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Lifting: May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, control behavior through physical restraint, assist non-ambulatory students, and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment; may work prolonged or irregular hours
Environment: Exposure to biological hazards
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress
