Position Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Operations, assists building custodians in maintaining a sanitary and safe facility for students, employees, and the public; minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper, and timely manner and overseeing and supporting assigned custodians in the performance of their assignments.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists in the preparation of budgets for the purpose of recommending new and replacement equipment purchases.
  • Assists with inventory planning and control for the purpose of promoting efficient practices.
  • Conducts meetings as needed for the purpose of disseminating information to custodians.
  • Coordinates sanitary disposal services for the purpose of meeting the needs of the district.
  • Develops standards for the purchase of custodial supplies and equipment in coordination with the warehouse for the purpose of ensuring quality control and standardizing district services.
  • Develop and train cleaning standards throughout the district.

  • Develop work schedules and coordinate workloads for custodians for the purpose of ensuring efficient services.
  • Development of Instructional manuals and guidelines.
  • Evaluates custodial employees with input from administrators and other staff for the purpose of promoting professional growth and ensuring adherence to district employment standards.
  • Keeps records of operations in conformance with District and State policies for the purpose of developing and submitting reports as required.

  • Work with state and local agencies for the purpose of complying with rules and regulations.
  • Monitors and inspects custodial work for the purpose of ensuring adherence to established district cleaning standards.
  • Monitors safe working practices and safety programs for the purpose of ensuring efficient practices and promoting proper working habits.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of personnel for the purpose of making recommendations for hiring quality staff.
  • Prepares accident and injury reports as needed for the purpose of following district procedures.
  • Provides training and supervision for district custodial staff for the purpose of promoting efficient practices.
  • Repairs custodial equipment as needed for the purpose of ensuring employees have the necessary equipment to complete job requirements.
  • Maintain a preventative maintenance schedule for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment, including quarterly air filter changes, fan motors, and belts.
  • Reports safety hazards and repair needs to appropriate personnel for the purpose of ensuring safe facilities.
  • Research and test new custodial methods, supplies, and equipment for the purpose of improving custodial services.
  • Works cooperatively with administration, other staff, and custodial staff in evaluating site needs, developing custodial cleaning schedules, and recommending equipment and supply needs for the purpose of providing efficient services.
  • Implement and assist with Integrated Pest Management, IPM, practices district wide. 
  • Manage Safety Data Sheets, SDS, to adhere to OSHA standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
  • Knowledge of general custodial practices, i.e., finishing VCT floors and wood floors, operating custodial equipment, ISSA standard cleaning practices, and managing custodial workflow.
  • Knowledge of Building Management Systems, BMS.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods of supervision.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable Safety Data Sheets.
  • Knowledge of the care and maintenance of equipment used in custodial work.
  • Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
  • Ability to plan and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to train new personnel and coordinate the efforts of a work crew.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, the public, and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
Safety Requirements
  • Develop and maintain mandatory safety programs for all custodians.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations governing the proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Ensure custodians use proper safety equipment while completing assignments.
  • Train custodians in state and local rules and regulations.
Travel Requirements
Frequent travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Ability to withstand heights and work in crawl spaces.
  • Typical risks associated with using tools of the trade.
  • Occasional strenuous physical work.
  • Occasional work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
Qualifications Profile
  • High School Diploma.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • 3 years of leadership or supervisory experience.
  • 2 years of head Custodian or similar experience
  • Degree or trade school certificate. Preferred
  • Successful experience in building maintenance, ground maintenance, and repair.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's license or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Computer and technology skills.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
Working Conditions
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents, contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.
