Spanish Teacher (Grades 9-12)

Position Purpose
Salt Lake Academy High School is a 9-12 charter school located in Herriman, UT. Our enrollment is 400 with 65 student athletes being a part of the Real Salt Lake professional soccer program. Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the ideal candidate will provide engaging and effective instruction in Spanish language and culture, fostering students' linguistic proficiency, cultural understanding, and enthusiasm for language learning. Through innovative lesson planning, differentiated instruction, and integration of technology and authentic resources, the Spanish Teacher creates a dynamic learning environment where students develop communication skills, cultural awareness, and appreciation for global perspectives. By nurturing a supportive classroom community and collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders, the Spanish Teacher cultivates an inclusive and stimulating educational experience that prepares students for success in an interconnected world.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that align with curriculum standards and foster students' proficiency in Spanish language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment conducive to language acquisition and cultural appreciation.
  • Assess student progress through various formative and summative assessments and provide timely feedback to students and parents/guardians.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners, including English language learners and students with special needs.
  • Integrate technology and multimedia resources to enhance language learning and cultural understanding.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to coordinate curriculum, share best practices, and participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, and administrators regarding student progress, behavior, and academic concerns.
  • Foster a passion for Spanish language and culture through authentic learning experiences, such as cultural projects, language immersion activities, and community events.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for students, promoting a lifelong appreciation for language learning and global citizenship.
  • Stay current with developments in language education, instructional strategies, and cultural trends to continuously improve teaching practices.
Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators.
Coaching expierence in soccer, volleyball or basketball is welcome.

Equipment
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in Spanish language, including advanced fluency in speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Strong knowledge of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and syntax, with the ability to effectively teach these concepts to students.
  • Experience in developing and implementing engaging and culturally relevant lesson plans that meet curriculum standards and promote language acquisition.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds of students, including English language learners and students with special needs.
  • Excellent communication skills in both Spanish and English, including the ability to effectively convey complex ideas and provide constructive feedback to students, parents/guardians, and colleagues.
  • Proficiency in using technology and multimedia resources to enhance language learning, such as interactive language software, online resources, and digital media.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage classroom materials, assess student progress, and maintain accurate records.
  • Collaboration skills to work effectively with colleagues, administrators, and community stakeholders to support student learning and contribute to a positive school culture.
  • Passion for teaching Spanish language and culture, with a commitment to fostering students' appreciation for language learning, global citizenship, and cultural diversity.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to the evolving needs of students and educational trends, while maintaining high standards of teaching excellence.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Works in standard office and school building environments.
 
Certification/License:

  • Utah State Certification as a Spanish Education Teacher.
  • ESL Endorsement is beneficial 
Education:
  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Masters Degree is beneficial.  Opprotunities to teach concurrent enrollment courses with SLCC for candidates with a masters degree.
Experience:
Successful prior teaching experiences in Spanish a plus.
