Teacher Job Description
John Hancock expects a high level of knowledge, skill, and preparation from teachers. In return, teachers are acknowledged and treated as professionals with an opportunity for continuous professional development, scheduled collaboration with colleagues, and the exercise of autonomy in their classrooms to meet the learning needs of students. Teachers are expected to manage all aspects of their classrooms including academic instruction, social skills, physical environment, monitoring, assessment, and communication with students and parents.
Demonstrated knowledge and skill in teaching subject areas.
Utah Professional License (preferred)—John Hancock will consider those with Associate Licenses working toward Professional Licensure.
Support for the mission, vision curriculum, pedagogy, and model of John Hancock Charter School.
Teaching experience (preferred)—John Hancock will consider new teachers with respectable academic preparation.
Proven skills in communication, collaboration, and professionalism in teaching, another profession, or previous employment.
Willingness to work with diverse populations including students receiving special services.
Willingness to be held accountable for student outcomes.
Must be able to stand, move, or walk throughout the school and classroom for prolonged periods.
Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at time.
Must be able to help students who need physical assistance.
Must be able to kneel, sit, stand, crawl, push, and pull to assist and teach children throughout the day.
Must be able to sit and work on a computer for prolonged periods.

A teacher develops lesson plans that ensure students’ achievement of Utah Core Standards and the school’s grade-level priority standards.
A teacher coordinates lesson plans with other grade-level teachers and specialists to provide students with interdisciplinary learning experiences.
A teacher prepares students for grade-level common assessments and all required State testing.
A teacher prepares individual student achievement reports for parents according to the schedule established by the school.
A teacher creates a classroom environment conducive to authentic learning by employing a variety of appropriate teaching techniques and methods, including direct instruction, guided practice, cooperative learning, and project-based learning.
A teacher differentiates instruction, monitoring, and assessment to meet the needs of individual students.
A teacher ensures that activities and instruction are tied to relevant and meaningful outcomes.
A teacher promotes presentation, performance, writing, visual representation, and any other appropriate ways for students to articulate and demonstrate their learning.
A teacher makes use of all available resources, including provided texts, to enrich instruction and student learning.
A teacher makes appropriate modifications and accommodations as required by students’ IEPs or 504 plans.
A teacher participates in the school’s Child Find efforts, multi-tiered systems of support, and other interventions to ensure that students eligible for special education and related services can be identified and students at risk for failure can be supported.
A teacher collaborates with administrators and coaching staff to identify areas for improvement, receive constructive feedback, and incorporate new strategies, methods, and pedagogical approaches into classroom instruction
Evaluation and Reporting
A teacher monitors and assesses the progress and achievement using diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments.
A teacher keeps an accurate record of student progress and achievement as required by the school.
A teacher meets with parents at formal times scheduled by the school and on an informal basis as needed, requested, or assigned.
A teacher provides reports of progress as required by the school or as requested by parents or the school’s administration.
A teacher ensures the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics, and state and federal laws.
A teacher completes the required professional development, activities, volunteering, and coursework to maintain licensure, endorsements, and other certifications.
A teacher sets and achieves annual professional goals in collaboration with administrators and in accordance with the stated professional goals of the school.
A teacher stays current on scholarship in subjects taught by attending conferences, researching, reading, and collaborating with subject-specific colleagues in and outside the school.
A teacher attends and participates in all professional development opportunities and activities provided by John Hancock Charter School.
