Description

Job Summary:  Employee serves as a liaison among the home, the schools, and the community to alleviate any personal/social adjustment problems which may be obstructing the educational progress of students. Offers case management services for students with autism, serious emotional disturbance, mental retardation, or other students in need of crisis intervention.

Essential Functions:  

  • Provides for an effective working relationship with students, parents, principals, teachers, and others concerned with student welfare.
  • Assists others in diagnosing the problems of students.
  • Provides interagency case management for students with disabilities such as autism, serious emotional disturbance, or mental retardation, and accesses services with in the community through application of the Comprehensive Services Act by filing appropriate paperwork for FAPT.
  • Presentation of cases at FAPT to obtain funding for students.
  • Interprets to teachers, administrators, and the public, the function and purpose of the school social worker.
  • Works with parents toward student adjustment in the home situation, i.e., counseling sessions, parent groups.
  • Interprets to parents, the functions and objectives of the school.
  • Represents the school division on certain inter-agency committees.
  • Assists regular and special education teachers and other school personnel in identifying the causes of students’ problems and when possible, in adjusting the school environment to allow students to make full use of the educational experience.
  • Assists in the planning and preparation of all disciplinary review activities.
  • Provides direct social services to students with attendance problems, poor health, anti-social behavior, and those that are indigent and/or neglected.
  • Documents and prepares on an as needed basis, CHINS affidavits for court intervention.
  • Participates, as needed, in child study and school level screening committee meetings and Student Assistance Team meetings.
  • Participates, as needed, in eligibility committee meetings.
  • Prepares, as needed, social history documents including social behavior information on student sreferred to special education consideration.
  • Conducts and prepares Counseling Assessment and Social Work Needs on an as needed basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director and/or Supervisor of Special Education.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Have a minimum of two years of full-time successful experience as a social worker with a public agency
  • Have experience with crisis intervention and case management for students with disabilities such as autism, serious emotional disturbance and mental retardation
  • Hold a Masters Degree from an accredited graduate school of social work with a minimum of 60 graduate hours and a Social Worker endorsement
  • Have demonstrated the professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, parents, school personnel and community agencies
Salary:  This is a 10 month position; starting salary $53,414.00.  Additional compensation awarded for credits earned toward advanced degrees.  New employees to Spotsylvania County will be compensated for up to 20 years of experience.
