POSITION:  Director of Student Activities – Middle School and High School
 
Salary/Hours:

JOB SUMMARY:  The Director of Student Activities organizes, implements, manages and supervises the extracurricular program at the middle and high school level and manages and supervises the use of the school buildings by students, parents, and the community. In addition, the Director of Student Activities schedules all athletic and extracurricular events, procures and maintains equipment and evaluates all Assistant Directors of Student Activities, coaches, and extracurricular activities sponsors.

REQUISITE EDUCATION AND SKILLS:
  • Must hold a Postgraduate Professional license from the Virginia Department of Education with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12. Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience at the secondary school level.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the total extracurricular program offered at the middle and high school level.
  • Must demonstrate leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary to work with all stakeholders.
  • Must possess excellent communications skills to interact with community members, coaches, extracurricular sponsors, parents, students, teachers. and other administrators.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: (including but not limited to the following)
 
  • Complies with all school laws, State Board of Education regulations, and all policies and regulations made by the School Board and Superintendent.
  • Performs all duties deemed necessary by the School Board and Superintendent for the efficient and successful operation of the school system.
  • Establishes and promotes a positive vision and culture for the athletic program in the division
  • Coordinates and supervises the MPCS athletic and extracurricular programs.
  • Maintains a calendar of all student activities and building use.
  • Prepares and publicizes supervisory schedule for student activities and building use.
  • Prepares and maintains a handbook for coaches/sponsors.
  • Prepares a handbook for student athletes.
  • Develops and manages the budget for all interscholastic sports and extracurricular activities.
  • Oversees approved fund-raising activities.
  • Supervises the maintenance of all activity and athletic equipment.
  • Represents the school as athletic director for applicable VHSL District, Regional, and State activities.
  • Completes the evaluation of coaches and activity sponsors.
  • Researches and develops in conjunction with the principal, and division superintendent an athletic booster organization. 
  • Monitors and maintains the eligibility list for student athletes
  • Assesses all VHSL activities and makes recommendations to appropriate administrators for change, improvement, or discontinuance. 
  • Assists principals and the schools’ assistant activities directors in supervising and evaluating the activities to ensure quality and continuous improvement.  
  • Works with principals in the preparation of an annual budget and the keeping of accurate records on school expenditures for all VHSL supplies and equipment. 
  • Prepares and maintains all information for the activities/athletic sections of the MPCS school webpage.
  • Manages athletic and parent appeals, concerns, and matters of eligibility. 
  • Reviews and makes recommendations on the location of all equipment, athletic fields and buildings with principals and the school plant facilities.  
  • Monitors VHSL activities to ensure Title IX compliance. Develops appropriate written guides and materials for all phases of the VHSL program. 
  • Arranges for use of other public and private facilities (i.e., golf courses) when required to support VHSL activities.
  • Serves as the primary information source for principals, coaches, athletic directors and the public on all VHSL matters and interpretation of VHSL rules and regulations. 
  • Develops and provides the master schedule for the use of school facilities, fields and stadium; assists in coordination of athletic tournaments sponsored by the school division.
  • Provides supervision for all home VHSL athletic contests and assigns appropriate supervision for other activities.
  • Promotes safety/risk management.
  • Coordinates all athletic and extracurricular field trips.
  • Monitors proper procedures for selling of tickets and the collection of monies.
  • Monitors the playing conditions of all fields, courts, and grounds.
  • Assists the principal in recommendations of personnel for hiring coaches and/or sponsors.
  • Counsels students, parents, coaches, sponsors, and school related personnel on NCAA Standards and academic requirements.
  • Organize and manage extracurricular program.
  • Oversees home events held at the stadium/fields/gym.
  • Assigns duties at athletic events.
  • Provides leadership and supervision of the assistant activities directors.
  • Responsible for the oversight of the middle school athletic and activities program.
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Demonstrates professional growth and attends all meetings called or approved by the Principal or Superintendent.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the Principal or Superintendent, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 
Must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions will be required.
