Description

English Language Development (ELD) Support Paraprofessional - 4 positions available

Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, the ELD (English Language Development ) Support Paraprofessional will support students learning English by providing individualized English lessons and academic/social/emotional support to Multilingual Learner (English Language Learner) students within assigned school(s).  The ELD Support Paraprofessional will also be involved in administering language proficiency assessments to determine students’ performance levels and to identify language acquisition needs. This position covers multiple schools across the Tooele, Grantsville, and/or Stansbury Park areas. Spanish speaking or other bilingual/multilingual skills are highly valued in this position but is not a mandatory requirement.  


Essential Job Functions

  • Works with Newcomer (recently entered into the country) English Language Learner students with English Language lessons and any other supports needed to acclimate student(s) to school system. 
  • Supports multilingual learner students and families with communication and information to support student and family engagement and participation within the school. 
  • Works collaboratively with ML Specialist, students' teachers, counselors, and other school personnel to ensure that English Learners’ academic and social-emotional needs are being met.
  • Meets individually with multilingual learner students to check on academic progress (grades, homework, attendance, etc.) based on referrals or at-risk determinations.
  • Provides organized documentation of students' English lesson progress, attendance tracking, and academic check-in visits.
  • Assists ML Specialist(s) with English proficiency assessments such as WIDA screenings and WIDA ACCESS testing processes.
  • Supports school and district's efforts to communicate and involve ML families which may include translation support for school meetings and/or events.
  • Works collaboratively with Student Services Family Liaisons and other community organizations to build cross-supports within multiple programs in order to better support multilingual learner students and their families. 
Equipment
  • Use standard office equipment when necessary, such as school device/computers and copiers.
Travel Requirements
  • Occasional district/school meetings may require some traveling during the workday.
  • Assignments will include travel between 1-3 schools per school day - gas/mileage reimbursement provided
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to comprehend, speak, read, and write fluently in English.
  • Ability to carry out instructions provided in written or oral form. 
  • Ability to report work orally or in written form to supervisor is essential.
  • Ability to check email daily and respond via email when necessary.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and continually maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, students, and EL families.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, families, employees, and others.
  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with English Learner students.
  • Willing to adjust and/or change based on supervisory feedback.
  • Must work well independently with self-initiative and organization skills.
Work Environment
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
Qualifications Profile
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge level for successful performance would be acceptable:
  1. High School Diploma or higher post-secondary coursework/degree
  2. Must be at least 21 years of age
  3. If hired to work in a Title I school, federal law requires a paraprofessional to take and pass the PRAXIS ParaPro Exam unless proof of college level coursework has been submitted (an associate degree; or 48 semester hours or 60 quarter hours of college credit).
Contract:
  • 29 hours per week, student-contact days (approximately 177 school days), Time Card
  • Support Professional Employees Salary Schedule 2023-2024: Level E Rate 1 ($15.85/hr starting pay); additional pay for Associate and/or Bachelor Degrees
