Secondary ELA Coordinator

Overview
The System-wide English Language Arts Coordinator’s duties will include the following:                                  
  • Assessment of ELA Curriculum PreK-12
  • Vertical Alignment of ELA Curriculum
  • Implementation of Tennessee State Standards and TCAP Implementation
  • Teaming Support – PLCs, Instructional Coaches
  • Support Classroom Implementation of High-Quality Curriculum
  • Provide Training and Support to Newly Hired Teachers
  • Initiative to Develop ELA Standards-based Grading
  • Work Collaboratively with the System-wide Data/Testing Coordinator
  • Work Collaboratively with all District-Level Academic Coordinators
  • Open Court Reading Curriculum Coordinator K-5
  • SRSD Writing Curriculum Coordinator K-5
  • Resource for Response to Intervention (RTI) ELA Initiative
  • Other Responsibilities Deemed Necessary by the Director of School

Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Secondary Supervisor, the ELA Coordinator will develop teachers' skills in implementing high-quality curriculum, facilitate teachers’ understanding of the purpose and process behind effective instructional practices, motivate teachers to adhere to best practices, support a love of reading in students, develop a commitment in teachers to foster a love of reading, and commit to personal learning by reading a wide variety of publications and staying abreast of ELA research.

Essential Functions
  • Lead district-level training regarding ELA instruction and curriculum implementation.
  • Mentor newly hired teachers.
  • Provide model lessons, side-by-side teaching, and other forms of coaching to support teachers and instructional coaches.
  • Develops and administers Language Arts curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a work environment that is safe and conducive to professional learning.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials. 
  • Guides and facilitates the development of curriculum maps and scope and sequence guides.
  • Translates curriculum and standards into learning experiences that develop vertical cohesion and focus and support implementation.
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in English grammar and syntax, sentence and paragraph structure, vocabulary and proper word usage, word denotations and connotations, creative writing, independent thinking, communication, and speaking.
  • Works with teachers, instructional coaches, and district personnel to prepare materials for instruction.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual students’ needs, including students with special needs; supporting individual and small-group instruction as needed.
  • Maintains familiarity with district assessments and Tennessee state standardized tests for the purpose of adapting curriculum to maximize student achievement on such tests.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by conducting research and attending seminars, workshops, and professional meetings.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, evaluating and reporting of instructional activities, achievement, and growth as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students, teachers, and parents.
  • Ensures that conduct conforms to the school and district standards and policies and establishes and maintains standards of professional behavior needed to achieve a positive learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members within schools and district-level positions.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and supports distribution and use.


Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by Central Office Supervisors, School Principals, or as designated by the Director of Schools.

Equipment
Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements
Travels to schools, district buildings, and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, spelling, literature, and other content areas taught.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, students, and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Work in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile
Certification/License:

  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to assignment
  • Master’s Degree preferred

Experience
Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
