CTE Career-Academic Advisor - Interim
Effective: August 1, 2023


SUMMARY: The Career/Academic Advisor position, 10-month student-centered position, is designed to empower students to make informed career decisions and educational pathways, which lead to success both in education and in the workforce.  The Advisor helps students define career aspirations and determines the various pathways of study that will lead to the achievement of their educational and career goals with emphasis on the defined pathways.  This grant-funded position will scaffold down each year of project implementation as processes are developed/implemented with the position being discontinued after the third year (Year 1: 100%, full-time position, Year 2: 66%, Year 3: 33%). 
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Facilitates/assists students (beginning in 7th grade to postsecondary education) in developing an educational pathway, which will lead to a successful career path. Works closely with School Counselors, Education Liaisons and CTE personnel in each of the schools and spends in-depth time with each student as education and career path decisions are made for the established pathways.

  • Collaborates with School Counselors, Education Liaisons and CTE Personnel in providing education and career assessment interpretation to students and parents, specifically as it relates to the established pathways.
  • Serves as a liaison between educational leaders (secondary and postsecondary) and business leaders.
  • Connects students to early postsecondary education opportunities, such as Dual Credit and Dual Enrollment, which enhance their educational and career experiences.
  • Assists with student transition from high school to post-secondary education, employment training and the workforce.
  • Establishes and maintains a student tracking system designed to measure student progress in the pathways (middle, high school, postsecondary) and with work based learning opportunities.

  • Works in collaboration with School Counselors, Education Liaisons and CTE personnel to coordinate a variety of events and programs (career tours, student placement and follow up, teacher and counselor in-services, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the smooth transition between the various education tiers (middle, high school and postsecondary).
  • Maintains liaisons with post-secondary institutions, employers, community leaders and organizations for the purpose of building resources and expanding educational and career pathway opportunities for students.
 
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Participates in and/or leads a variety of meetings, workshops and committees for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remaining knowledgeable of program guidelines.
  • Maintains access to current labor market data available at the local, state and national levels and the educational pathways needed to attain identified market opportunities.
  • Performs marketing activities aimed at informing all key stakeholders about the presence of the Advisor in the school system and its duty functions including parental engagement activities.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as directed by appointed supervisor.
 
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to develop concepts and ideas in oral and written form.
  • Excellent public speaking skills required for presentations to various stakeholders.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computers to input data and produce reports, to organize records, track participants and meet data reporting requirements of the project.
  • Ability to interpret data and “breakdown” research reports that pertain to the alignment of educational opportunities with career opportunities.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff, business and industry, the general public and education institutions.
  • Knowledge and experience in the effective use of technological media and material.
  • Knowledge in current software applications, programs and hardware.
  • Ability to problem-solve.
  • Proficient in research.
 
 
REPORTS TO:  Career & Technical Education Director, Designated High School Principal 
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university preferred. 
  • Minimum of 3 – 5 years of experience in education and/or business and industry.
  • Experience working with a variety of people in a group and an advisory capacity.
