Job Summary:
This teacher supports students who are visually impaired (VI) in Granite School District. The teacher will work with school teams to teach, coach, and train others on supporting VI students, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Utah State Board of Education (USBE) Special Education Rules, and Granite School District policies and procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Prepares student education plans in consultation with parents and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team members.
- Designs instruction and records progress of students.
- Acts to ensure appropriate IEP implementation in area of service.
- Directs the work of instructional assistants and supports members of the IEP team.
- Monitors delivery and frequency of Visually Impaired-related service.
- Maintains appropriate student data and other records and submits reports as required.
- Develops instructional plans when necessary and appropriate.
- Develops learning systems for use in community and campus settings.
- Manages student caseloads across multiple school settings.
- Facilitates curriculum resources for VI students between and among student levels.
- Travels between multiple district and school locations to perform duties.
Non-essential Functions:

Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Skills in evaluation and treatment of student with visual impairment, including multi-disabled students.
- Ability to create appropriate IEPs.
- Ability to keep accurate files and performance logs.
- Skills in appropriately assisting VI students with standardized assessments.
- Basic knowledge of Orientation & Mobility skills and programming.
- Knowledge of low vision aids and how to order materials in both large print and braille.
- Knowledge of technology for the blind and visually impaired including:
- Braille Writer;
- Slate and Stylus;
- Abacus;
- Braille and Speak; and
- Computer Technology (Jaws, Zoom, Text, PacMate and Braillenote).
Required Education and Qualifications:
- Requires one of the following:
- a valid Professional Educator License issued by the Utah State Board of Education with a Special Education License Area of Concentration and a Blind and Visually Impaired endorsement; or
- an equivalent license in another state or country.

- Interacts and collaborates with employees, patrons, vendors, administrators, and secretaries in schools.
- Works with various department secretaries, coordinators, managers, and directors.
- Works positively and collaboratively with District departments including administrators and secretaries.
- Strong interpersonal skills along with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people.
- Able to create and support a team-based environment within the program and department.

Working Environment:
- Work takes place in a typical school environment.
- Supervision of students requires both indoor and outdoor responsibilities.
- Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
- Requires travel between multiple school locations in all types of weather and air quality.
