General Function:

Works under the direction of the Special Education Teacher to provide education services and support to students with disabilities. 

 

Organizational Structure:

 

Job Title: Level 1 Special Education Paraprofessional 

 

Supervisor’s Title:  Level I Special Education Teacher 

 

Jobs Reporting to this Title: None

 

Summary and Overall Objective:

Students with disabilities require specialized instructional accommodations which will be supported by the special education paraprofessional.

 

Essential Functions Duties and Responsibilities:

 
  • Provides instructional support assistance to students and student groups to reinforce and follow up learning activity. 

  • Assists in observing and recording behavior patterns and follows appropriate techniques to reinforce acceptable behavior. 

  • Assists certified educators with the presentation of learning materials and instructional exercise. 

  • Participates in the development, maintenance, and carrying out of systems for classroom management. 

  • Guides students in working and interacting harmoniously with other students. 

  • Supervises students in all areas of the school. 

  • Operates various types of office equipment such as computers, copy machines, etc.

  • Monitor students inside and outside of the building during lunch hour.

  • Ability to work effectively with individuals with disabilities. 

  • Ability to learn tasks quickly and work with a minimum of supervision. 

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. 

  • Ability to write simple correspondence. 

  • Ability to maintain discipline among students. 

  • Ability to conduct learning activities with small groups of students. 

  • Ability to meet and interact with teachers and students with tact, courtesy, and discretion. 

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals 

  • Ability to learn special needs of particular individuals. 

  • Ability to learn and follow rules and regulations as they apply to job assignments. 

  • Ability to learn emergency procedures. 

  • Ability to follow directions.

Qualifications:

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, knowledge and experience requirements; the machines, tools and equipment used; and any licenses or certifications required. 

 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Associates degree or 48 college semester hours (72 quarter credits) from a college or university; 720 hours on a certified transcript from a technical school or passing results (460) on the ETS ParaProfessional Assessment

  • If the applicant cannot provide evidence of Highly-qualified status as per R277-324-5, the applicant must take and pass Project Para Modules and Assessments prior to working with students. (There is no cost for this assessment). Applicants can begin the modules and take the assessments at any time by registering at para.myesu.org
     

 

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • Previous experience working with individuals with and without disabilities preferred.

Work Environment: 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 

  • Employees working under this position description are considered to have occasional contact with students who may place the employee at risk to bodily fluids. 

  • Required to monitor students inside and outside of the building even in inclement weather. 

 

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to be able to lift 55 lbs, spend long periods of time on floor (kneeling or sitting), and move about to various parts of school buildings. 

  • Ability to assist individuals with disabilities 

  • Ability to escort and assist students as necessary. 

  • The employee is regularly required to use fingers and hands; talk and hear. 

  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. 

  • Specific vision abilities for this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision.

 

Machines, Tools, Equipment Used: 

  • Copy machines and high speed duplicators. 

  • Computer technology. 

  • Video equipment including VCR, camcorders and TV equipment. 

  • Classroom Technology (i.e., projectors, document Cameras, SMART Boards, etc.)

 

Possible Hazards: 

  • Contact with dissatisfied individuals

 

Expected Work Hours:

  • 15  hrs/week plus lunch monitor 5 hrs per week

  • During regular school hours

 

Travel Requirements: 

  • Personal transportation to and from school building is required
