Position: Computer Technician

Job Type: Full-time 

Contract: 260 days 

Salary Scale: Commensurate with Experience 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 

Reports To: Director of Technology

General Definition of Work: Performs intermediate skilled technician work troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining computer and electronic hardware, software and peripheral equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. 

Essential Functions: (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.) 

  • Provides direct services to school system personnel in the set up, use, maintenance and repair of computer hardware, software and peripherals; provides assistance with software problems

  • Provides workstation hardware and software technical support including peripherals such as printers and hand-held devices

  • Provides support for all desktop program applications

  • Identifies and solves end user questions and problems over the phone and on-site involving data access, e-mail and program application problems

  • Conducts informal one-on-one interviews with teachers and staff to help resolve issues or problems

  • Installs, upgrades, repairs and replaces end user hardware and software applications; creates and distributes operating system images for system distribution 

  • Installs and replaces network infrastructure equipment such as switches, routers, etc


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

General knowledge of the operation, uses and capabilities of electronic data processing main and peripheral equipment; general knowledge of hardware and software installation, maintenance and repair; general knowledge of network administration practices and techniques; ability understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to recognize and assess maintenance and repair needs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and system users. 

Education and Experience:

Associates/Technical degree with coursework in computer technology, or related field and moderate experience in troubleshooting, installing and maintaining computer hardware, software and peripherals, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 


Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations of classified personnel.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data and/or information. 

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to maintain a cordial and effective relationship with all stakeholders, visitors and clients. 

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to be on site within the school division while others operate equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. 

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. 

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform calculations for budgeting purposes, interpret graphs and raw data as needed. 

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution. 


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements 

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work at the work site or school construction work site daily, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 25 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. 

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; most tasks require oral communications ability. 

Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed on-site within the school division with and without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. construction sites, business office, playground, classroom, light traffic).
