POSITION DESCRIPTION
 
Title:                            Part-Time Reading Tutor (Title I Funded)
 
Reports To:                  Principal or Designee
 
FLSA Status:                Non-Exempt   
 
Summary:                    The Title I Reading Tutor works with students in grades K-3 in small groups of students of five or less, who have been identified as needing additional support in early literacy. The Title I Reading Tutor works side by side with Prince Edward County Elementary School’s Reading Team to help students improve early literacy skills, including phonemic awareness and fluency. The Title I Reading Tutor will be required to collect data to monitor student progress and assist with the administration of the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALs) in the middle and end of the year. 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.
 

  1. Maintain a positive learning environment and respond to individual needs of students.
  2. Ensure district policies are observed during all activities.
  3. Create a safe classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  4. Always keep all children in the classroom under supervision.
  5. Adhere to the daily schedule. 
  6. Be familiar with fire exits, fire drill procedures, severe storm, and tornado warning procedures. 
  7. Maintain confidentiality as defined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  8. Demonstrate the ability to adapt to circumstances. 
  9. Exhibit good judgment and use appropriate language or behavior while on assignment.
  10. Report for duty 10 to 15 minutes early and remain on duty for the entire assignment.
  11. Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  1. Hold a high school diploma or have passed a high school equivalency examination approved by the Board of Education; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  2. Ability to relate to children, teachers, and other school staff
