GED / ISAEP Teacher

Position Purpose 

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Alternative Education, the Alternative Education Teacher/ISAEP Advisor is responsible for teaching classes to high school GED candidates ages sixteen to nineteen, including curriculum development, evaluation of students’ progress, and accurate maintenance of all students’ records. GED tests require students to demonstrate their ability to apply analyze, and evaluate information. Therefore, the development of a course of study for each student, based on the areas in which the student needs remediation is critical. Classroom instruction should be interactive and incorporate a variety of teaching techniques, materials, and resources, always keeping in mind the ultimate goal of students’ success on the GED exam. The ISAEP Advisor/teacher is responsible for teaching and monitoring each student’s Economics and Personal Finance online learning modules.


Essential Functions

  • Builds relationships with students and parents to ensure student success in the GED program.
  • Provides blended classroom instruction utilizing small group direct instruction, online, and workbooks in the following areas: math, reading, writing, science, social studies, and Economics and Personal Finance.
  • Teaches students enrolled in the Suffolk Transition Education Program (STEP). The teacher will need to build each students reading and math skills in order for students to improve their scores to be considered for entry into the Individualized Student Alternative Educational Plan Program (ISAEP). 
  • Provides ongoing tutoring and test preparation to students requesting to enter GED program in addition to teaching GED curriculum.
  • Develops, revise, and evaluate curriculum to meet the needs of the students based on each student’s Individual Student Alternative Education Plan.
  • Evaluates and track students’ academic progress regularly, using standardized assessment tools.
  • Maintains current records on all students, including accurate attendance records, GED applications, and any court reports.
  • Recommends students for GED testing that meet the required minimum score and have a state ID.
  • Administers TABE and GED Ready™: The Official Practice Test for placement in ISAEP program. 
  • Organizes and maintain class area, including equipment and materials.
  • Displays a positive attitude with all students and staff; act as a supportive team member in a collaborative environment.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled division wide professional development with English, math, science, and Social Studies department. Attend Virginia Department of Education ISAEP training sessions.
  • Collaborates with Supervisor of Alternative Education to adjust student plans and recommend students for GED testing.
  • Collaborates with English, math, science, and social studies teachers, supervisors, and instructional specialist in order to discuss specific content related questions.
  • Collaborates with employers, trade schools, military, and community colleges admissions department in order to smoothly transition after completing GED program.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with use of computers and basic computer applications
  • Collaborates with Principal, Guidance Counselor, Supervisor of Alternative Education, and Graduation Coaches to identify students that are currently enrolled in school, at least 16 years old, is at risk of dropping out, and is not earning the required number of credits at school.
  • Holds meetings with Principal, Guidance Counselor, Parent(s), Student, and Supervisor of Alternative Education to review guidelines, benefits of diploma vs. GED, and recommendation of students for ISAEP program.

Additional Duties

  1. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Alternative Education or other appropriate administrator.
  2. Identify and prepare certain students for entry into the GED program.

Travel Requirements 

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications Profile


  • Bachelor's from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Must hold a valid Virginia Teaching License.
  • Math or English endorsement preferred.

Terms of Employment

  • Salary Range:  $46,350 - $77,641 ($2,944 Additional for Master’s Degree)
  • Contract:          10 Months
  • Benefits:           Employer Portion Paid Retirement, Life Insurance, Contribution to Medical Insurance, Personal and Sick Leave
