Assistant Principal – High School
Location: Mecklenburg County High School
Reports to: Mecklenburg County High School Principal
Position Description:  Under the general supervision of the School Principal, assist in providing leadership and supervision to administer the educational, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs of the high school and to support the safety and educational development of students in accordance with Board of Education policies, division administrative procedures, and all rules, regulations, and applicable laws. Provide leadership in program development, implementation, monitoring, and improvement. Assist in planning and leading professional staff development. Serve as principal in the absence of the principal. 

Examples of Essential Functions (The following list is illustrative of broad tasks and responsibilities. It is not intended to detail every task or responsibility.):

  • Assists in the administration of school programs consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Provides leadership, supervision, and direction to staff with regard to the ongoing evaluation and improvement of educational programs, including curricular and extracurricular activities.
  • Assists in supervision of students and events, including curricular and extracurricular activities.
  • Promotes a school environment that is safe and conducive to individualized instruction, cooperative curriculum development, and student learning.
  • Assists in ensuring that Board policies and procedures are implemented and followed at the school.
  • Assists faculty and staff in their continual professional growth and encourages them to experiment with new approaches or strategies to teaching to improve student engagement and learning.
  • Supervises departments/projects as assigned.
  • Assists in coordinating the work of school staff and school district program leaders to develop and implement instructional programs and teaching practices.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and works with teaching staff to modify instructional methods to fit students' needs, including students with special needs.
  • Involves staff in the evaluation of programs and the planning of new programs.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective and professional communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct and attendance conforms to the school's standards and school district policies.
  • Supervises and evaluates teaching staff and other building employees in accordance with the school district's evaluation plan, and makes recommendations regarding goals, areas needing improvement and continued employment.
  • Assists in the budgetary and financial affairs of the school consistent with school district policies.
  • Other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. 
Physical and Work Requirements:
  • Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and fax machines, and telephone.
  • Considerable walking about the school and campus in performance of duties.
Travel Requirements:
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy including differentiation of instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of secondary school curriculum and operations.
  • Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation and staff supervision.
  • Knowledge of best practices in student discipline and of VTSS or similar comprehensive approaches to student discipline.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed (e.g. SIS, GoogleDrive).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and manage time constraints.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to leadership, performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Qualifications Profile 
  • Current Virginia Professional License - Administration and Supervision Pre-K -12 – required.
  • Three or more year’s successful public school teaching experience is required.
  • School-based administrative and/or other leadership experience preferred.
  • Teaching at the high school level is preferred.
  • Must be eligible to lawfully work in the United States of America.
FLSA Status: Exempt 
CONTRACT DAYS:  12 month contract
