Description
Under the supervision of the Coordinator of History/Social Sciences K-12 and Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the History/SS Instructional Specialist will work to provide leadership and expertise in history and social sciences content and curriculum.
Essential Functions
Assists in the planning, developing, implementing, and monitoring of history (social studies) programs, services, activities and curriculum;
Ensures proper correlation between history (social studies) instructional delivery and the attainment of Standards of Learning;
Conducts classroom observations to provide feedback that facilitates teacher reflection and growth
Models research-based instructional best practices;
Develops and implements aligned history (social studies) district assessments;
Monitors all levels of history (social studies) performance data;
Collaborates with teachers and administration to analyze assessment data, diagnose instructional needs and identify research-based instructional strategies to address areas for improvement;
Develops instructional resources and materials to support the implementation of common assessments, performance-based assessments, and project-based learning;
Provides guidance and participation in division and school improvement initiatives;
Assists with organizing and coordinating instructional committees;
Plans and facilitates administrative and staff professional development/professional learning communities focused on research-based instructional best practices;
Assists in collaborating and consulting with other staff to coordinate the instructional program;
Prepares information for local, state and federal reports;
Prepares and maintains files and records;
Performs related tasks as required.

Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy history (social studies) teaching and learning;
Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans;
Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students;
Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed;
Ability to organize and coordinate work;
Ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders
Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications Profile
Must possess a current Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in elementary, middle, or high school history (social studies).
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in elementary education, history/social studies or related discipline; Master’s degree preferred but not required.
Must possess a current Virginia Teaching License with an endoresement in elementary, middle, or high education or middle or high secondary history.
Minimum of 3 years successful teaching experience.
Instructional leadership experience is preferred.
Terms of Employment
- Salary Range: Salary Scale $56,960 to $95,413 ($2,944 Additional for Master’s Degree)
- Contract: 11 Months Employment
