Description

Position Purpose:

  • Under general supervision of the Special Education Director, following the guidelines of USBE and Tooele County School District the Adapted Physical Education teacher is responsible to provide small group instruction to students using adapted physical education techniques to improve physical fitness, gross motor skills, perceptual-motor skills, or sports and game achievement.
Essential Functions:
  • Instruct students with disabilities, in person and online, using adapted physical education techniques to improve overall physical fitness, gross motor skills, and sports and games achievement. 
  • Function as a member of the special education team; consult and collaborate with team members, Special Education teachers, and Para educators to provide services to accommodate or modify student’s program.
  • Evaluate referred students to determine Adapted Physical Education needs.
  • Prepare lessons in accordance with IEPs and IDEA; Maintain student records, collect data of physical education program; communicate on-going student progress to parents/guardians, special education and general education teachers, school administration, district personnel, and other service professionals via progress reporting and Individual Education Plans.
  • Attend IEP team meetings as directed by the special education team.
  • Supervise, teach, and monitor student teachers, peer tutors and other staff assigned to assist with programming.
  • Adapt instruction, equipment, materials, activities, and education environment to meet the individual needs of all students, including age and skill level appropriateness.
  • Provide positive feedback for students and help build an appreciation for Physical Education. 
  • Establish and keep a safe, orderly, and effective environment; manage PE inventory and request/order equipment as needed. 
  • Attend Professional Development or professional meetings to develop or maintain professional knowledge.
  • Assure confidentiality of all students’ information.
  • Other duties as assigned; complete other tasks as assigned by District and School Administration.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Work in a standard office and school building environment.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Adapted Physical Education or Special Education principles, theories, testing, methods, etc. as well as proven methods of maximizing the educational experience of students with special needs.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education, special education, and students.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents and Special Education teams.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Minimum qualifications:
  • A Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline.
  • A valid Utah teaching license in either Adapted Physical Education, Secondary Physical Education, Special Education, a micro-credential in or an endorsement in Physical Education; Or in process application to USBE for licensure
  • Proficiency in the use of modern technology and office equipment.
  • Must pass a background check
  • Motor vehicle operator’s license; ability to provide own transportation.
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Prior experience as an Adapted Physical Education Instructor 
  • Preferred Certified Adapted Physical Education Teacher (CAPE)
  • Previous experience working with students with special needs
  • Masters Degree in applicable education discipline or Special Education
FLSA Status: Exempt
Contract:
Full time, 187 day contract per year; plus 10 additional days paid over 12 months
Certified Salary Schedule
Benefit Eligible at a full time, certified rate
8 days sick leave and 4 days personal leave per fiscal year
