Under the direction of the building principal, the School Counselor - Elementary plans and provides appropriate services for students; provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of all students; and monitors and evaluates student outcomes. They collaborate with teachers, administrators, district psychologists, licensed social workers, school nurses, parents, and community groups to promote the success of each student; develops, selects and modifies guidance lessons and materials to meet the needs of all students, and supports the school PBIS and SEL Programs. They meet with students individually, in small groups, or in classroom sessions. School Counselors - Elementary will also help students transition from elementary to secondary schools.

Summary and Overall Objective:
The purpose of the School Counselor in the school setting is to promote and enhance the learning process of every student, and, assist all students academically, socially, emotionally and behaviorally by providing activities to help them become successful global citizens.
Essential Functions Duties and Responsibilities:
Discuss the school counseling program and action plans with the school administrator
Provide services to students in the areas of academic, personal/social, and career development as needed
Counsel students individually and in small groups
Conduct classroom guidance activities
Review school data periodically to ensure that the school counseling program is meeting the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students
Prepare reports, records, lists, and all other required information and data
Encourage teacher/parent communication and community involvement
Assist students in conflict resolution
Manage crises as a member of the school PBIS and behavior team
Assist in the identification of students with special needs
Interpret student records
Initiate student programs
Supports the school PBIS and SEL Programs
Refer students to appropriate school personnel and community agencies
Participate in any required district, child services, 504, or other related meetings
Participate in parent/teacher conferences as needed
Serve as a resource for school personnel and parents.
Maintain a variety of files/records and departmental library of supplementary and reference materials
Collaborate with the school's social worker to determine best placement for a student's case file as needed.
Follow required procedures and practices
Submit monthly time and task reports electronically as requested
Attend district-wide counselor meetings
Participate in professional development activities that relate to counseling and related school programs
Provide leadership and collaborate with other educators in the school-wide integration of USBE’s School Counseling Program model
Implement an effective referral and follow-up process
Use available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program such as websites, interest surveys, career explorations, and links to community resources
Work with the administration to create, coordinate, and implement student orientation programs for incoming students
Conduct parent education classes as needed
Join and participate in appropriate professional organizations and continue to further their academic involvement
Is responsible for understanding and adhering to laws, District policies, and procedures
Predictable and reliable attendance
During times of state or district emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties that are not required on a normal basis in support of educational and operational priorities. e.g. Performs general cleaning and sanitizing of work areas, provides remote assistance to students and staff, and any other reasonable duty as needed.
Teachers are expected to dress in good taste and be well groomed, befitting to members of a respected profession. Cleanliness of self and attire, neatness, and attractive grooming are stressed and expected. Teachers should always dress in a manner that professionally sets them apart from students. Exceptions to the dress limitations are school approved special events or activities.

Ability to work as a member of a team as well as the ability to work independently with little direct supervision
Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English at a level required for successful job performance.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals and legal documents.
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from parents, community, and staff members.
Ability to effectively present information to parents, community, and students.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out essential duties of this position.
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems involving concrete variables situations.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs
Ability to plan and implement lessons based on grade level objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree from a college or university.
Preferred Education and Job Related Experience:
Experience working in a K-6 environment.
An ESL endorsement would be beneficial.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
An active Utah School Counselor K-12 License is required.
