Educational Specialist - Special Education

Position Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Student Services, to work with Student Support Services with a special focus on the needs of students who are eligible for special education services. This individual will demonstrate leadership ability and collaborate with school administrators, counselors and psychologists as well as members of Student Support Teams at individual buildings to provide support to students, school staff and parents in the development of programs for individual or groups of students that will promote a positive school climate and a successful learning environment.
Essential Functions

  • Support general education teachers and administrators to implement appropriate strategies to meet the needs of students with IEPs
  • Manage compliance of accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs in the general education classroom and during Special Education service time
  • Analyze assessment results drive and inform instruction and IEP development
  • Develop and implement appropriate behavior management techniques for students with special needs
  • Assist in developing IEPs in accordance with federal, state and district standards
  • Create and maintain Special Education documentation as required by federal state and district regulations
  • Schedule and facilitate IEP meetings in a collaborative and professional manner
  • Develop positive relationships with parents and families to engage them in the IEP process
  • Manage and/or assist with the development of 504 plans
  • Develop and provide ongoing professional development for general and Special Education staff
  • Maintain knowledge of current Special Education regulations and best practices
  • Collect and analyze data for RTI, Special Education Services, FAPT and the Autism Training Team
  • Administer needed workshop and Professional Development for the staff and administrators
  • Address issues of Behaviors, IEPS, FBA, BIPS and accommodations with staff and parents as needed 
  • Incorporate prior teacher’s techniques with new learned skills for academics and behavior modifications to enhance the success of transition for students with disabilities
  • Mentor new special education teachers
  • Model how to write lesson plans, IEPS, and other related special education paperwork 
  • Observe students (behaviors and learning styles) as needed
  • Observe teachers within the classrooms to enhance learning
  • Develop Behavior Modification Plans for troubled students
  • Supervise and coordinate Mecklenburg Special Olympics
  • Attend numerous workshops concerning special education in the areas of academics, laws, assessments, and behavior modification
  • Assist teaching in integrating assistive technology into the special education curriculum
  • Observe, plan and mentor teachers and administration in the private school settings
  • Provide support for principals with teachers having classroom management problems
  • Supply needed materials and strategies to support teachers in need
  • Assist parents understand of their child’s special Education Rights
  • Work closely with school social worker, psychologists, Director of Student Services and therapists to ensure our students’ needs are being met appropriately
Additional Duties
Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the Student Services Department and program.

Travel Requirements
Travel to and from meetings at various locations may be required.

Qualification Profile
Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree/Master’s Degree and a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Special Education.
Must have completed at least five years of successful classroom teaching experience in a special education classroom.
Terms of Contract
Salary Based on current Teacher Salary Scale
Contract – 210 days
FLSA Status:  Exempt
