Job Title: Bilingual English Learner Teacher Assistant

Contract: 175

Salary schedule: Teacher Assistant


High School Diploma or GED; Must hold an associate degree or have 2 years of post secondary education, or be a high school graduate and pass a PARAPRO or OGET test. 

All teacher assistants newly hired and working or at a site supported with Title funds must: 

  • Have an associate degree 

  • Have 2 years of post secondary education, or 

  • Be a high school graduate and pass the OGET test

Training or Experience Required: Previous work with youth, and/or intercultural experiences, desirable.

Special Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: Bilingual in English and Spanish

Basic communication skills to exchange information, give/receive simple instructions and respond to inquiries.

Data Recording/Record Keeping: Performs simple data recording/record keeping operations. Assists with lesson planning and implementation of lessons.

Knowledge: Reads and interprets routine written or printed materials such as charts, diagrams, maps or instruction material.

Reports To: Teacher

Job Goal (Purpose of Position): To assist teachers with Limited English Proficient students' acquisition of English and subject-area concepts.

Contact with others: EL teacher assistants communicate with parents or interpret school communication for parents.

Other Performance Measures: Successful performance of the job requires some customer service/people skills to resolve problems and provide information as requested. It requires following safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury to self or to students. It requires following appropriate school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Participate in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activity planning.

2. Conduct learning exercises with small groups of students.

3. Assist teachers with classroom activities.

4. Assist in maintaining neat, safe work areas.

5. Maintain records for evaluation of student's behavior and performance.

6. Provide escort and assistance to students as necessary.

7. Adhere to Board of Education Policy and assigned schedules.

8. Maintain confidentiality.

9. Interpret/translate for students and teachers and support family communication with the school.

10. Assist Limited English Proficient students with learning English and subject area concepts.

Supervision exercised: An incumbent does not supervise.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions:

Other than those physical/mental requirements included within the essential functions: Must be able to communicate on the radio and telephone.  Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
