Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, follows Utah State Board of Education (USBE) and Tooele County School District (TCSD) standards to develop students' awareness and understanding of Biotechnology, and Medical Forensics in a technical environment.

Essential Functions

  • Prepares students for career and college readiness. Works with industry partners to help students get a Medical Innovations pathway.
  • Develops and administers Biotechnology, Medical Forensics consistent with USBE and TCSD goals and objectives.
  • Work with the district in developing new companion courses in Food Science.
  • Teaches knowledge and understanding of biotechnology, chemistry, and proper lab operating procedures.
  • Teaches knowledge and incorporates active and applied learning in the course (hands-on and lab activities).
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in educational activities, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Uses appropriate instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computer and experience in teaching in a lab environment.

Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current health education instructional methods, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding education and students, as well as relating to health education.
  • Knowledge of biotechnology, medical forensics, and chemistry.  
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Work Environment
Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile
Applicants must have a current Utah teaching license or have the ability to obtain a current Utah teaching license as outlined by the guidelines of the Utah State Office of Education (USOE).

  • USBE License Level: Professional AEL or LEA Specific 
  • USBE License Area and/or Endorsement: Secondary Education (6-12); CTE Health Science License Course Specific
  • USBE License Endorsement: CTE Biotechnology endorsement
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

  • BS Degree (Master's Degree preferred) from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

Successful prior teaching or student teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.

FLSA Status: Exempt
Full time, 187 days per year, paid over 12 months
Certified Salary Schedule
Benefit eligible at a full time, certified rate
8 days sick and 4 days personal leave
