Job Title:             SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST ASSISTANTS                                      Exemption Status:  NON-Exempt

Position Summary:
In performing the Primary Function and Essential Duties of the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant, confidentiality must be maintained at all times.
 
Primary Function:
Under the direction and supervision of a certified speech-language pathologist (SLP) the SLP-A will assist and support the provision of speech therapy service to students in the educational setting by conducting various tasks/treatment interventions to assist students with speech and language disorders.
 
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders Program
 
Speech-Language Pathology Assistants and Aides 0520-02-06-.04 (4) All non-licensed speech-language pathology assistants or speech-language pathology aides shall work under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist. All non-licensed speech-language pathology assistants or speech-language pathology aides employed by an LEA or charter school on January 1, 2021 or after shall hold a valid speech language pathology assistant certification issued by the Tennessee Board of Communication Disorders and Sciences.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Essential Duties:

  • Under the direction of the certified SLP, support the provision of Speech Therapy services to students as outlined in Individual Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Implement therapeutic programs and treatment within the instruction and guidelines established by the supervising SLP. Assist individual students and small groups of students through instructional activities designed to remediate the identified communication disability(ies). Examples of this include:
    • Provide drill and practice activities
    • Monitoring of student progress
    • Guide and assist in-classroom models of intervention
  • Assist with documentation as directed by the SLP while adhering to the student’s IEP and procedures regarding the documentation of Speech Therapy services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including clerical duties related to preparing materials and scheduling activities as directed by the SLP.
  • Knowledge of effective student management techniques.
  • Monitor the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices.
  • Comply with regulations and reimbursement requirements and activities.
  • Working knowledge of HIPPA regulations and maintaining compliance.
  • Participate in professional growth opportunities as agreed upon by the Speech Language Pathologist Assistant, the Speech Language Pathologist and the Director of Special Programs.
  • Project a positive and professional image at all times.
  • Maintain safe and clean work area and adhere to school safety standards.
  • Maintain positive relationships and rapport with co-workers, students and support staff.
  • Report to work at the time designated by the educational facility and coordinate schedules to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency during the workday.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Director of Schools, Special Education Supervisor or the McMinn County Board of Education.
 
 
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer, Standard testing equipment
Posture: Frequent sitting and standing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching, frequent walking grasping/squeezing
Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) and occasional lifting between 15-30 pounds
Environment: Work inside, occasional districtwide travel as requested by administration
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress, may work prolonged or irregular hours
