Transportation Mechanic 

Position Purpose: 
Under the Supervision of the Transportation Director, perform skilled duties in the maintenance, service and repair of school buses and other system vehicles in order to prevent problems and interruptions of district educational programs and to ensure the safety of all students and district staff during transportation.

Essential Job  Functions:

  • Using a computer, read and diagnose complex mechanical problems
  • Conducts complete engine tune-ups using computerized equipment
  • Repairs electrical systems to ensure proper functioning.
  • Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning.
  • Repair, adjust or replace starters, generators, transmissions and clutches.
  • Working knowledge of DPF Regen system, Transportation Services, Preventative Maintenance.
  • Maintains high standards of safety and good housekeeping in work area.
  • Repairs and changes tires as required
  • Schedule and prioritize all maintenance activities.
  • Assist with maintaining parts inventory.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on a regular basis within required time frame
  • Ability to work well and effectively communicate with school personnel and Transportation Director.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Immediately correct problems, which will affect the health and safety of the public, students, or staff
  • Attend training the Transportation Director feels will improve garage services.
  • Attend USBE's annual in-service training program.

Equipment:  Uses standard office equipment such as computers, and copiers, hand tools, power tools and vehicles.

Work Environment:  Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noise, chemicals, etc.  Ability to carry and/or lift 50 pounds or more.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to follow rules and procedures
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, students, and others.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
  • proficiency in the maintenance and operation of motor vehicles and applicable diagnostic technology.
  • Training/expertise in both diesel and gas engines
  • Ability to work extended hours when deemed necessary the Transportation Director.
  • Must possess "trouble shooting" skills and be able to solve emergency problems as they arise.

Qualifications Profile:
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.  Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Previous experience as a mechanic required
  • Valid Utah Driver's and CDL license with School Bus endorsement
  • Certification as a State Certified Inspector
  • Must not have any prior DUI convictions

FLSA Status: Non-exempt


40 hrs per week, 12 months per year
Support Professional Employees Salary Schedule M2  $ 22.72
