DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:The Department of Student Living Cottage Program provides a learning and independent living environment where students can develop to their fullest potential. Twenty (20) cottages with 8 to 12 students in each cottage.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Counselors are under the direct supervision of the Cottage Supervisor and Deans. Counselors provide on-going care and training for deaf students; administer the rules and regulations of TSD; receive visitors; accompany students on field trips; maintain the safety of assigned students; keep records and make reports; maintain high personal standards as a role model for students; plan and direct learning, living and recreational activities; build and maintain appropriate rapport with students, staff and parents; counsel students; answer the phone, deal with crisis situations; identify and fulfill emotional and social needs of students; assist in the development and implementation of the Individual Program Plan, and work 37.5/40 hours per week during evenings and weekends. Perform other duties as assigned. May be required to live on campus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: High School diploma or GED Certificate. Knowledge and abilities: Applicants must be fluent in sign language at the level established for this position within the Tennessee School for the Deaf Sign Communication Program as demonstrated by an appropriate assessment tool after training. Our students need counselors who have ability and willingness to acquire and/or utilize advanced techniques in professional parenting, signing skills, effective decision making and problem solving skills. A valid Tennessee Driver's License and a clean record are required.
STARTING SALARY AND BENEFITS: $1,718 per month, for ten months, orientation and on-going training, medical insurance, retirement, sign language classes, 10 minutes from the University of Tennessee campus, 35 minutes from the Smoky Mountains.
