Position Title: Extern Audiologist

Location: West Tennessee School for the Deaf 100 Berryhill Drive Jackson, TN 38301
Position Description: Under direct supervision, the extern will be provided a broad range of clinical experiences encompassing the scope of practice in audiology. Extern will be responsible for evaluating and treating the pediatric population with hearing disorders, including infants, toddlers and school age children in accordance with professional and Tennessee State Department of Education quality standards. The extern shall provide services as assigned by the immediate supervisor and Principal of the West Tennessee School for the Deaf in furtherance, of the school’s mission and goals of child and family care, education, outreach, and public service.
Obligations of the Site 1. To provide a broad range of clinical experiences encompassing the scope of practice in audiology. 2. To provide the student with full-time experience as an audiology extern. 3. To provide feedback regarding the student’s performance and progress periodically throughout the year (typically three times a year). 4. The extern site shall provide orientation of the Facility to the student at the beginning of the program. 5. The extern site shall be responsible for scheduling or arranging Audiology clinical experience activities for the student. 6. The extern site shall retain complete responsibility for patient care, providing appropriate supervision of the student by a supervisor who has ASHA Certification (CCC-A) while the student is providing Audiological services at the facility. The degree of supervision will be commensurate with the proficiency level of the student, the degree of difficulty of the clinical experience, and will be mutually agreed to by the supervisor and the student in consideration of ASHA’s scope of practice and code of ethics. 7. The extern site shall maintain a sufficient level of staff employees to carry out regular duties. 8. The extern site shall provide emergency medical treatment to the student (and faculty, if applicable) if needed for illness or injuries suffered while on duty during the contract term. Such treatment shall be at the expense of the individual treated. 9. The extern site shall maintain, for the duration of the contractual term, any accreditation requirements and certify such compliance to the University or other entity as requested by the University. The extern site shall also permit authorities responsible for the University’s accreditation to review the extern site's clinical facilities and services as necessary.
Obligations of the University 1. The University shall provide health records of students (and faculty, if applicable) upon request by the extern site. 2. The University shall require written evidence of professional liability insurance coverage for the individual students concerned during the contract term. The minimum coverage per student shall be $1,000,000.00. 3. The University contact, the clinic director, will maintain contact with the site on a semester basis or as deemed appropriate for the individual site and/or student.
Obligations of the Student 1. Provide an evaluation of the facility and/or the supervisor(s) involved in the student’s clinical training. 2. Be subject to approved policies of the University and the extern site. Each party will be responsible for enforcing their respective policies. 3. Provide the site with a list of goals to obtain during the externship year. This list of goals will also be provided to the clinic director at the University. 4. The student will participate in an on-line distance learning course through the university. 5. The student will discuss with the externship supervisor any state licensure requirements and complete necessary paperwork. If licensed by the state, the student will read, be aware of and responsible for applicable statutes and laws. 6. The student will not refer to themselves as an audiologist. Any laws pertaining to hearing aid dispensing are strict and must be closely followed by the student. The student will not use their name or credentials in any form of advertising until conferred with the clinic director (this includes all forms of media: print, audio, web, television, brochures, to name a few). Additionally, use of the University of Memphis’s name cannot be used in advertising without following the appropriate University procedures. The clinic director will assist the student with finding the appropriate consultation resources for advertisement ? Applicant must be willing to be fingerprinted and required to have a TBI/FBI background check. In addition, background checks will be conducted through the Tennessee of Registry of Sexual Offences, the Tennessee Registry of Abuses, and the Tennessee Child Protective Services Background Check. ? Salary and Benefits: This is an extern position; therefore no benefits will be offered. Salary range is $15,000 annually, $15.1515 per hour for part-time position, 22.5 hours per week maximum. Hours to be determined by supervisor and Principal.
