CAFETERIA ASSISTANT SCHOOL PERSONNEL 1. JOB TITLE: Cafeteria Assistant
2: DEFINITION: The position of Cafeteria Assistant requires an individual who is neat in appearance, clean in work habits and follow all safety rules; be confidential; work cooperatively with school staff; be courteous; have a positive attitude toward work; and demonstrate a happy, helpful, attitude toward students. Employee reports directly to Cafeteria manager. The terms of employment allows the Cafeteria Assistant to work on days the cafeteria serves students plus three (3) days per year for staff training/pre-open set up/close up. The employee is subject to a post offer physical examination with a written statement from the physical showing a satisfactory health record and stating the employee is free of any contagious or communicable disease in such form as night endanger the health of school children, as well as results of a TB skin test. All employees hired after January 1, 2000 are required (post offer and prior to commencement of the employment duties) to supply fingerprint samples which are submitted to a criminal history records check conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. All hiring decisions are contingent upon satisfactory criminal background check results. This position is classified as Non-Exempt.
3. EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION: Work will be performed in cafeteria on school grounds. Work characterized by necessity for occasional physical exertion and by working in storeroom, kitchen and/or freezer. Work involves medium-heavy lifting of boxes, reaching, pushing, pulling, stooping, climbing, maneuvering in confined spaces and prolonged standing and walking; work involves exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals and smells commonly associated with cooking, cleaning and school in general. 4. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB: Assists in all phases of food preparation, service and proper food storage, so as to help ensure efficiency in these areas and all follow up operations work in the cafeteria according to established procedures and methods. Performs occasional lifting and carrying objects up to fifty (50) pounds. Performs required standing and walking as shift allows. Performs occasional lifting and carrying objects up to fifty (50) pounds, Follows safety and sanitation rules. 5. ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFROMED: Performs other duties and special projects as assigned. Employee must be willing to assist in other areas of cafeteria, including but not limited to, cashier. 6. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Must possess the physical body dexterity and coordination to achieve angles and positions required to perform various lifting. Must be able to distinguish between different chemical materials/food ingredients with ability to read and understand label information. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn occasional hazards and safety precautions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees, children and general public. Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instruction. Ability to report to work as scheduled and notify appropriate individuals if unable to work. Ability to perform job duties for entire workday. Must have sufficient strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and move objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; must be able to lift objects weighing more than 5 pounds with assistance. 10. Must have sufficient strength/ability to independently push cart weighing up to fifteen (15) pounds at a distance of fifty (50) feet. 11. Must pass physical abilities test (PAT)/post offer screen for employment. 12. Employee must be able to assist with cashier duties in cafeteria. 13. Must follow safety and sanitation rules. 7. STAFF RELATIONSHIP: Reports directly to the Cafeteria Manager
8. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time: Annual contract, hourly wage local scale with benefits; work only on days the cafeteria serves students plus three days per year for staff training/pre open set up/ close up. Non-Exempt.
Part-time: Hourly wage set by Board of Education; annual contract; no benefits. Non-Exempt.
