JOB TITLE: English Language (EL) Teacher


GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the school principal, functions as a facilitating agent for the successful integration of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students into the English language instructional environment of the school system. Creates a supportive/positive learning environment. Interviews, evaluates, and determines students' language needs. Plans, organizes and provides instruction and support; administers tests; documents ELL instruction, goals and progress. Utilizes audio visual (A/V) tools and computer programs. Facilitates effective home-school communication. Complies with LEP policies. ELL teachers work in conjunction with the classroom teachers to support LEP students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Interviews, evaluates, and determines the specific language needs of all incoming and continuing students whose primary exposure to language is something other than English. Using this information, develops a LEP Plan with a school team to determine a program of instruction to address the specific language needs of each ELL student. • Plans, organizes, and provides instruction and support along with the classroom teacher and shows written evidence of preparation. Instruction is coordinated with the district’s instructional program so that students meet and exceed learning targets and the requirements outlined in state and federal law. • Administers standardized tests. • Maintains complete and accurate records of student’s progress and evidence of growth and progress as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation. • Seeks the support of district specialists when concern regarding student progress arisesvand collaborates with instructional staff. • Uses technology, including audiovisual tools and computer programs. • Provides a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility, enhance motivation, clearly communicate classroom routines, and incorporate challenging instructional strategies. • Facilitates effective home-school communication by coordinating conferences, PEP (Parents and Educational Partners) meetings, and monitor reports. • Participates in professional development activities and professional meetings. • Understands and complies with the policies, rules, and regulations governing LEP students.
