Description: New Kent County Public Schools is seeking a Mechanic for our Transportation Department who performs Department of Education required periodic preventive maintenance and diagnosis; adjusts, repairs and services gasoline and diesel powered vehicles; changes and repairs tires. Test drives repaired equipment. Oils and greases vehicles; changes filters. Notifies supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken. Drives School Bus routes as needed and related work as apparent or assigned. This position is deemed as essential personnel. By virtue of their job description, essential personnel provide services that are essential to the health, welfare and safety of the NKCPS employees and students. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Assistant Director/ Lead Mechanic. Work may be required outside normal work hours in emergency and on-call situations.
Qualifications: Applicants applying for this position must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid driver's license, and have or be able to obtain a CDL within three (3) months of employment. Applicants applying must be able to pass a background check and drug test. Must be able/ willing to obtain appropriate certifications. State Inspection Certification and ASE Diesel Certification strongly preferred. Must have own tools to work on vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications: Four (4) years of experience as a journey-level automotive mechanic; Possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license with a commercial driver’s license (CDL) endorsement or the ability to obtain the CDL endorsement within 3 months of hire date.
