Title:   Routing Specialist
 
Salary Range:  31,154 - 47,389


Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation, performs intermediate skilled clerical work assitsting in the planning and scheduling of routes, and transportation serrvices; does related work as required. 

Essential Functions:

  • Assisting with the planning, scheduling, implementing and assigning transit and school transportation services; preparing and maintaining transportation records and files.
  • Plans, assigns, and implements student ridership rosters for regular, special education or special trip routes;
  • Schedules, coordinates, revises, and communicates bus routes, schedules, changes, and revisions; 
  • Updates and maintains computerized routing system; analyzes bus routes to ensure efficiency; 
  • Receives and resolves transportation problems, interacting with parents, teachers, drivers, and students;
  • Advises employees, citizens, and school personnel regarding transportation schedules, changes, and programs;
  • Analyzes new subdivisions and draws them in EDULOG; Assists with planning of zones for new schools and repors pertaining to boundary planning;
  • Maintains telephone and radio communications with drivers and staff;
  • Ensures compliance with State regulations;
  •  Assists with office duties, receives telephone messages, communicates with drivers by two-way radio;
  • Serves as substitute driver as required;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Equipment
  • Uses standard automotive and bus equipment, and telephone.
 
Travel Requirements
  • Travels to and from school district buildings, to vehicle service stations, field trip locations and other destinations are required.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of transit and school transportation principles, practices, and procedures;
  • general knowledge of office practices and procedures;
  • thorough knowledge of the geography of the City and the location of streets and roads;
  • thorough knowledge of the attendance boundaries within the school district;
  • ability to respond appropriately and effectively to problems, concerns, and questions from citizens, parents, teachers, and students;
  • ability to operate a personal computer and applicable computer applications;
  • ability to express ideas clearly and accurately orally and in writing; 
  • ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, students, school officials, associates, and the general public. 
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects;
  • work requires fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions;
  • vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; 
  • hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels;
  • visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operations of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities;
  • the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
 
Qualifications Profile
 
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some transportation experience.
 
Special Requirement
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's (DMV) License.
