Job Summary:

Preschool Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work to assess, monitor, and treat speech, language, social communication, and cognitive-communication deficits in preschool-age children who have been identified with a disability according to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Essential Functions:

- Assess, monitor, and evaluate students' communication skills and progress on Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals.
- Administer assessments in accordance with state and district testing procedures.
- Provide speech language therapy within the preschool classroom setting in accordance with student IEPs.
- Create data collection systems, maintain appropriate records, prepare student progress reports.
- Maintain file compliance and fulfill other special education compliance requirements.
- Learn and implement the Preschool Services program requirements with fidelity.
- Support safe and effective learning environments.
- Communicate with parents through conferences, telephone calls, e-mails, and other appropriate means, to discuss students' progress.
- Communicate and cooperate with other professional staff regarding students' growth.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

- Possess skills in working with all areas and severity levels of communication disorders.
- Possess knowledge and understanding of special education requirements for preschool children including evaluation, eligibility, IEP development, placement, and service delivery in the least restrictive environment.
- American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification or willingness to complete clinical fellowship year is preferred.
Required Education and Qualifications:

- Requires a Utah State Board of Education (USBE) cleared criminal background check.
- Requires a master's degree in Speech-language Pathology from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Requires one of the following:

- a valid Professional Educator License issued by the Utah State Board of Education with a Speech Language Pathology License Area of Concentration;
- completion of a Utah State Board of Education approved Speech-language Pathology preparation program pending recommendation for a professional license; or
- an equivalent license in another state or country.

New Speech-Language Pathology program graduates who have not yet received their educator license may upload a conferral letter from their university preparation program in lieu of their license.  This letter must include the anticipated date of graduation and the specific area(s) in which the applicant will be licensed.
Working Environment:

- Work takes place in a typical school environment.
- Supervision of students requires both indoor and outdoor responsibilities (e.g. recess duty, gymnasium activities, etc.) in all types of weather and air quality.
- Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
