Social Media Specialist


Position Purpose

Plans, organizes and implements communications strategies, with an emphasis on community engagement, social media and website content, working under the supervision of the Community Engagement Officer.


Essential Performance Responsibilities

  • Supports the goals of Suffolk Public Schools using a variety of communications and stakeholder engagement strategies.

  • Collaborates to develop effective multimedia presentations for both district-wide and school-level programs.

  • Coordinates use of interactive media platforms to develop family/community engagement opportunities.

  • Manages the division's online presence with primary responsibility to maintain the division-wide website as well as assisting with staff and student intranet portals, and providing support to staff on website and social media use.

  • Produces social medial communications, managing and expanding district-and school-related interactive social media platforms.

  • Assists with all other related projects, publications, special events, and other duties as deemed appropriate by the Community Engagement Officer.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of public relations and community engagement.

  • Excellent writing skills and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and judgment skills.

  • Demonstrated skill in website and social medial management.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, website development tools,  internet applications, analytics, and new media platforms.

  • Ability to work on a team, and also the ability to work independently.

  • Interest in the field of public education.


Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Work in standard office and school building environments.

  Education and Experience
  • Associates degree (or equivalent experience) with major course work in English, communications, public relations, social media management, marketing, or related fields.

  • Experience using web content management and design resources, and social media tools.

  • Previous work experience in school public relations preferred.


Terms of Employment

  • Salary Range:  $34,387 - $52,352

  • Contract:          12 Months

  • Benefits:           Employer Portion Paid Retirement, Life Insurance, Contribution to Medical Insurance, Annual Leave and Sick Leave

    FLSA Status:       Exempt
