Supervisor of Advanced Instruction


Position Purpose:

Performs intermediate professional and administrative work in assisting the planning, development and implementation of total instructional programs in advanced courses and programs including gifted services, World Languages, Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and specialty programs. Work is performed under general supervision of the Chief Academic Officer and Director of Curriculum and Instruction. 


Essential Functions:

  • Provides instructional support to K-12 Advanced Instruction, Dual Enrollment, and World Language departments;

  • Coordinates the K-12 Advanced instructional programs in all core areas;

  • Coordinates the K-8 Gifted program to include testing, eligibility, curriculum, and goals;

  • Work and collaborate with the instructional supervisors;

  • Assists in the planning, developing, implementing, and monitoring of all Advanced Instruction, World Language, Gifted, and Speciality programs, services, activities, and curriculum;

  • Coordinates and facilitates professional development;

  • Coordinators the district implementation of PSAT, National Honor Society Programs, Governor’s School for the Arts, Summer Residential Governor’s Schools, Tidewater Regional Governor’s School, College and Career Readiness programs, and other new advanced instructional programs;

  • Coordinates honors and Advanced Placement test development and summer assignments;

  • Organizes the dual credit program and works directly with community colleges;

  • Prepares procedures and documents for dual enrollment program;

  • Organizes Advisory Board and attends regional meetings;

  • Performs related tasks as required.


Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer and the other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student student learning styles.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of gifted education and college and career readiness.

  • Thorough knowledge curriculum and program development.

  • Thorough knowledge school division rules, regulations and procedures.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.

  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed, ability to operate a multiple forms of technology

  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and parents.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.


Education and Experience: 

  • Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in elementary, middle, or high school. Gifted endorsement preferred.

  • Must have at least three (3) years of successful teaching experience

  • Must have the personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students of all grade levels and parents, administrators, and teachers.

  • Master’s degree is required.

  • Instructional leadership experience is preferred. 

Physical and Mental Demand, Work Hazards

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Equipment:  Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and telephone.

Travel Requirements:  Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.


Terms of Employment

  • Salary Range:     $59,263 to $90,130 (Grade 31)
  • Contract:             12 Months Employment
  • Benefits:              Paid Retirement, Life Insurance, Contribution to Medical Insurance, Sick Leave and Annual Leave
