GEAR UP is a Federal Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. GEAR UP is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. This grant will follow a cohort of students from 7th grade into their first year of college. GEAR UP provides necessary resources needed to help these students graduate and enroll in postsecondary education.

Job Summary:

The GEAR UP Grant Assistant Coordinator will help oversee the implementation of all programmatic and fiscal responsibilities as identified in the grant at GEAR UP schools.  The GEAR UP Grant Assistant Coordinator will work with the GEAR UP Grant Coordinator to collaborate across district departments, with GEAR UP School Site Coordinators, district and school leaders, school staff, higher education institutions, and community partners to implement all programmatic and fiscal requirements of the grant.
 
GEAR UP is a data driven grant requiring the timely collection, preservation, classifying, and reporting of budgetary, expense, and student service data. This position will be required to help the grant coordinator ensure that GEAR UP programming is data-driven and that the GEAR UP program is meeting federal, USU STARS!, and Granite School District policies and expectations. The funding of this grant is approved annually for the subsequent year.

Essential Functions:


- Work in collaboration with the district GEAR UP Grant Coordinator, GEAR UP Secretary, GEAR UP School Site Coordinators, school staff, higher education institutions, and community partners to implement all programmatic and fiscal requirements of the grant. 
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with school, district, post-secondary personnel and community partners.
- Ensure services are data-driven and aligned with the federal GEAR UP project by being able to collect, analyze, interpret, and summarize relevant data. 
- Provide leadership for district-wide GEAR Up Grant activities that include college awareness events, campus visits, participation in AVID, academic and college planning, and paying for college.
- Provide leadership for GEAR UP Grant activities that provide professional development for school site coordinators and school staff.
- Work with each school annually to build a work plan and budget aligned with the goals of the GEAR UP program.
- Monitor GEAR UP budgets and expenditures for GEAR UP schools and ensure that all efforts supplement, not duplicate, any efforts supported through other federally funded initiatives including as it relates to the cost-share requirement for the grant. 
- Provide monthly updates to district leaders and Utah State University’s GEAR UP Grant Project Director and Principle Investigator on the progress the schools are making to achieve the goals and objectives outlined in the GEAR UP Grant plan.
- Interprets/explains USU policies, Federal policies, and USU STARS! GEAR UP guidelines as they relate to Granite School District policies to school district staff, school site coordinators, and other engaged constituents in a clear and understandable manner.

Required Knowledge and Skills:


- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people, including peers, administrators, faculty, students, and the public.
- Knowledge of the GEAR UP Grant and understanding of the importance of college and career readiness for all students.
- Rxperience in promoting the success and achievement of students from diverse cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds in educational and community settings.
- Experience in monitoring and using data to inform desired student outcomes.
- Experience in program planning and budgeting processes.
- Competence in the use of computer programs including Excel, Windows, and other applications.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Experience working with school districts and secondary education and their expenses, budgetary requirements, and student information systems is preferred.
- Knowledge of GEAR UP guidelines, expenses, budgets, and data requirements preferred.
- Ability to create complex and accurate formulas and spreadsheets in Excel preferred.

Required Education and Qualifications:


- Requires a Utah State Board of Education (USBE) cleared criminal background check.
- Requires one of the following:

- a valid Professional Educator License issued by the Utah State Board of Education with a license area of concentration in one of the following:

- Early Childhood Education
- Elementary
- Secondary
- Special Education
- School Counselor
- School Social Worker; or
- School Psychologist; or

- an equivalent license in another state or country.

Required Prior Experience:


- Requires a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a licensed educator position.

Assigned Decision Making:


- Decisions are made as a team under the direction of the USU STARS! and CCR department leadership.

Non-Supervisory Interaction:


- Strong interpersonal skills along with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people.
- Able to create a team-based environment within the program and department.
- Work closely with grant director, program coordinator, GEAR UP secretary, and school site coodinators.

Supervisory Responsibility:


- Not applicable.

Budget Responsibility:


- In collaboration with grant director and program coordinator, responsible to create and submit yearly budget and cost-share budget to USU.
- In collaboration with the grant coordinator, oversees school budgets and manages expenditure approval process including cost-share requirement

Working Environment:


- Work takes place in a typical office environment
- Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation
- Works independently while dealing with interruptions that stop current work to resolve problems
