Title                                Division Wide Reading Content Area Specialist

Reports To                      Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
 
 
Position Purpose            The desired candidate for this position will serve as a Reading Coach for all teachers and will assist them with developing, planning and executing quality instruction for all students.  The Division Wide Reading Content Area Specialist Works closely with Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, principals and teachers to develop a division-wide Comprehensive Reading plan to improve the reading            achievement of all students. The position entails exemplary skills in developing, implementation and assessing instructional strategies to improve reading and overall achievement in all core areas in the school. The Division Wide Reading Content Area Specialist shall use instructional research and strategies, and coach teacher colleagues in successful completion of reading strategies for student achievement. The Division Wide Reading Content Area Specialist must commit to attend all training and/or staff development as determined by the school and the division.
 
Essential Duties
  • Assists with the alignment and articulation of the Virginia Curriculum Framework, Scope and Sequence, and research-based strategies.
  • Assists with building assessments that are aligned with curriculum and instruction priorities for improvement in reading.
  • Assists in planning teacher professional development based on division, school, and individual teacher needs.
  • Observes and models instructional reading strategies with teachers as guided by the Director of Curriculum and building administrators and provides immediate feedback on their progress.
  • Provides feedback to the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment regarding implementation issues and data collected.
  • Assists with the overall evaluation of reading programs in the school and develops strategies for improvement.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the five components of reading inclusive of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
  • Assists in promoting practices in explicit and systematic reading instruction.
  • Assists in modelling and monitoring lesson plans, small group instruction, reading stations and management boards.
  • Emphasizes and promotes Reading Across the Curriculum.
  • Develops Summer Reading Program.
Professional Qualifications    
  • At least a Master’s degree in Reading or a related area, Master’s Degree in Education and an Advanced Certificate in Reading, or a Master’s degree and a Reading Specialist Endorsement
  • At least four years of teaching experience
  • Strong communication skills; ability to write, speak clearly and accurately
  • Ability to work independently and multitask
  • Possess strong organizational skills

Salary Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience of the selected candidate for the position of Division Wide Reading Content Area Specialist, as well as the division’s budget.
