Director of Innovative Learning
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB The Director of Innovative Learning at Forest Park Academy provides overall leadership and support to the virtual programs in Roanoke City Public Schools and alternative program at Forest Park Academy. The Director of Innovative Learning at Forest Park Academy oversees the daily operation of online instruction throughout the system and will provide leadership, support, and training on an on-going basis. This position is instrumental in organizing computer-based programs used for instruction in Roanoke City Public Schools, in addition to the management of other programs currently used at Forest Park Academy. The Director will oversee online programs such as Virtual Virginia and PLATO Learning for credit recovery. The Director is responsible for modeling instructional strategies and working directly with curriculum specialists, to oversee the design, programming, implementation, and maintenance of student curriculum currently customized for credit recovery. The Director has ongoing contact with each school’s counseling department and will provide the support and information needed by those individuals to successfully implement established guidelines. This position will report to the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Designs and implements a long-range strategy for virtual learning programs, blended programs and online teaching and learning in the district. Develops programs, policies, and procedures for virtual learning programs. Oversees the daily operation of online instruction throughout the district and provide ongoing leadership, and support. Manages all online programs (Credit Recovery/Blended learning, and Virtual Virginia). Collects and analyzes data compiled from each school or department that uses online instruction. Remains current with online trends and policies to ensure program complies and meets state and/or national guidelines (NCAA, College board, Gifted). Collaborates with Curriculum and Instruction in cross-functional training to build virtual instructional capacity in teaching and learning. Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Designs and implements a long-range strategy for virtual learning programs, blended programs and online teaching and learning in the district.
Organizes and conduct a program of instructional supervision and evaluation including classroom and teaching observations.
Coordinates the use of subject matter specialists, resource teachers, and other resource personnel.
Implements curriculum and establishes educational objectives consistent with division goals.
Develops efficient systems for student and program appraisal.
Recommends changes as needed to meet student needs.
Evaluates grading policies and student progress with members of staff.
Assists teachers in planning field trips and using community resources.
Develops student master schedule.
Participates (or assigns designee) in Individualized Education Plan Meetings.
Ensures that all district policies and state and federal laws are followed for identification and services. This is done in conjunction with the Central Special Education Office and 504 coordinators.
Facilitates teacher professional growth, recertification, career ladder planning, and activities.
Develops programs, policies, and procedures for virtual learning programs.
Implements and maintains a code of acceptable student behavior.
Coordinates and supervises student affairs including after program activities.
Coordinates services to students such as counseling, health, and special education.
Approves student placements and programs.
Supervises student record keeping.
Administers and evaluates staff personnel to include recruitment and selection.
Monitors staff attendance and taking corrective measures if necessary.
Monitor performances in accordance with approved evaluation procedures.
Oversees the daily operation of online instruction throughout the district.
Manages all online programs (Virtual Academy / Credit Recovery / Blended learning / Homebound / Virtual Virginia).
Collects and analyzes data compiled from each school or department that uses online instruction.
Remains current with online trends and policies to ensure program complies and meets state and/or national guidelines (NCAA, College board, Gifted).
Participates in required training and developing a personal professional development plan.
Collaborates with Curriculum and Instruction in cross-functional training to build virtual instructional capacity in teaching and learning.
Establishes and maintains an effective program\community relations program.
Communicates with parents by means of programs, letters, telephone, and personal contact.
Participates in the activities of the Parent\Teacher Organization.
Communicates and interprets the Division’s policies, procedures, and regulations.
Utilizes school improvement teams to set objectives and evaluate programs.
Performs financial functions of the program.
Develops a budget with the help of program faculty, staff, and parent representative.
Monitor expenditures and ensures fiscal management of program-based funds as appropriated by the School Board.
Follows the district’s approved purchasing procedures.
Administers program-based accounting of student activity funds according to auditing guidelines.
Approves all free and reduced-price lunch applications in accordance with Federal guidelines.
Collects textbook fees and other program-based fees.
Performs building functions of the program.
Coordinates building rentals with the Office of Fiscal Services.
Evaluates cleanliness and safety of the facility, coordinating with Building Operations.
Maintains furniture and equipment inventories.
Supervises the use of the facility and grounds by all agencies.
Orders necessary instructional materials, textbooks, and equipment and analyzes the usage of such materials.
Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
