Job Summary:

The Secondary Health Specialist provides professional development, instructional strategies, differentiation ideas, and assessment support to health teachers throughout the district. This position is also responsible for creating and revising curriculum maps ad proficiency scales for health teachers in the district.  The specialist must have an understanding of Granite’s proficiency-based learning guiding principles, how to work within the CANVAS learning management system, and be prepared to support district-wide programs and interdepartmental initiatives.

Essential Functions:
 
- Design and update curriculum maps and proficiency scales for health teachers.
- Provide professional development, instructional strategies, differentiation, and assessment specific to the Utah core standards.
- Understand and implement Proficiency-Based Learning (PBL) guiding principles .
- Support district-wide and department programs and initiatives.
- Develop online class material.
- Oversee Botvin LifeSkills Training (LST) training for teachers and ordering of student workbooks.
- Chair the Human Sexuality Education Review Committee.
- Oversee district health teachers in Sex Education Law and Policy training.

Non-essential Functions:


- Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:


- Thorough understanding of the Utah State Core Health Education standards.
- Proficient in the use of the CANVAS software platform.
- Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
- Works as part of a team.
- Build collaborative partnerships with district departments and outside agencies.
- Problem solve and seek resources as needed.
- Display effective organizational, scheduling, and time management skills.
- Possess strong computer and educational technological skills.
- Work independently with little direct supervision.
- Accepts responsibility and is self-motivated.

Required Education and Qualifications:


- Requires a Utah State Board of Education (USBE) cleared criminal background check.
- Requires one of the following:

- a valid Professional Educator License issued by the Utah State Board of Education with a Secondary License Area of Concentration and Health Education endorsement; or
- an equivalent license in another state or country.

- A master's degree or higher from a regionally-accredited university is preferred.

Required Prior Experience:


- Requires a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a licensed educator position.
