SUMMARY: A UTVA Special Education teacher is a professional who prepares and delivers lessons and teaches small groups in a virtual classroom where students are able to respond and participate remotely. The Special Education teacher will collaborate with other special education teachers, students, learning coaches, administration, and general education teachers to meet the academic needs of his or her students, as outlined in their Individualized Education Plans. They will provide accommodations and modify curriculum when appropriate for the students on their caseload as well as their instructional load. The Special Education teacher will also facilitate communication with general education teachers and help prepare students for mandatory State testing. The Special Education teacher manages a caseload of students in special education which includes maintaining their IEP files, collecting/analyzing/sharing data, collaborating and building rapport with parents/students/IEP team/teachers/administration. They attend school meetings, trainings and professional developments to further their knowledge, as well as receive and implement feedback from observations conducted by instructional coaches and administration on a monthly basis.
KNOWLEDGE: Teachers must have knowledge of the content area they teach, effective, research-based teaching methods, special education laws, how to write and hold IEP meetings, basic computer skills, and how to engage and connect with students and families. Teachers must understand the special education laws, FERPA, what an IEP is and how to write one. They also must have a basic understanding of the disabilities they may be working with. (i.e. Autism, Specific Learning Disability, etc.) Teachers must understand their content area and be able to effectively create lesson plans that are engaging and based around state core standards. Completing IEP paperwork, Writing Present levels and goals, completing eligibilities (knowledge of what is required for re-evaluation assessments for each classification), collaborating with special education and general education personnel, and confidence conducting virtual IEP meetings is essential.
RELEVANT SKILLS: Be knowledgeable of specialized instruction and curriculum. Implement instructional modifications as deemed by a students’ IEP. Have the ability to engage/captivate/motivate students during classroom instruction. Be flexible during instructional times. Perform different forms of teaching pedagogy and teaching methods. Have the ability to gather formative and summative data, using the data to plan and dictate lesson pacing and planning. Write and implement effective IEPs. Monitor and record the progress of IEP goals and report as indicated by the IEP. Have a sound understanding of IDEA, special education policies and procedures. Be familiar with the disabilities classified under IDEA. Gather and analyze data, implementing the results in the IEP. Develop an effective data system. Have more than a basic understanding of the Microsoft programs. Have the ability to quickly learn programs specifically used within the school system (student information systems, IEP databases, etc.) Maintain accurate/updated records to ensure compliance. Have the ability to multi-task to accomplish tasks. Understand how to prioritize responsibilities appropriately, on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Exhibit exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Be available and prompt in responding to calls, emails, etc. Knowlegable and practiced in the Direct Instruction format, ability to praise students and give constructive review of their work, ability to look at a curriculum and create lesson plan from the it, ability to create scope and sequence of curriculum, ability to take feedback on your teaching, ability to implement what you learn in coaching sessions. Computer Skills: Word, Power Point, Outlook, Excel, Any of the Google docs, forms, spreadsheets, etc…, Knowledge/Experience with Blackboard Collaborate-Beneficial, Knowledge/Experience with Goalview-Beneficial. Communication Skills: Pleasant phone manner, Ability to not take things personally when talking to an upset parent, Ability to be flexible in communication forms such as texting, phone, and email. Leadership skills: Team player and contributor, Ability to take and implement feedback from instructional coaches and supervisors is essential.
