SUMMARY: Library Media Specialists are trained professionals who work each day to encourage students to become lifelong readers, and teach how to retrieve and use information, complete research projects, and become critical thinkers. They are responsible for maintaining and organizing books, magazines and other resources. Library Media Specialists process materials to put them into circulation, as well as assist patrons with library materials, audio/visual or computer equipment if necessary.

Makes resources available to students and teachers through a systematically developed collection within the school and through access to resources outside the school.
Provides access to the library media center collection through the management of an accurate and efficient organization and retrieval system.
Assists students in traditional and electronic methods of locating, evaluating, and accessing information in all available formats housed in the media center.
Provides access to the library media center throughout the school day, scheduling class visits flexibly to encourage use at the point of need; organizes and manages the library media facility in a manner that encourages access.
Develops and implements policies and procedures which insure that access to information is not impeded; interprets laws and district policies regarding information.
Informs teachers, students, parents, and administrators of new materials, equipment and services that meet their information needs.
Manages selection and ordering of materials through a process which involves teachers, administrators, students, and parents.
Researches and implements educational initiatives: gathers and maintains materials, collaborates with classroom teachers and administrators (Makerspace, STEM, etc.)
Administers budgets of library media resources.
Communicates library media program needs to the administration.
Assists with special projects.
All other duties as assigned by the administrator.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field
Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies or related field
Valid Oklahoma Library Media Specialist Certificate
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws applicable to education and special education. Ability to follow all district policies and procedures. Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done. Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators. Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player. Ability to document records accurately. Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees. Ability to listen effectively.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English language including common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts and mathematical operations to such tasks as balancing the Library Media Center budget or Book Fair
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to sit at a desk or in meetings, use keyboarding skills, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
