ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN III (VRS)
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Performs difficult technical work in the processing of the Virginia Retirement System and employee deductions; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Supervisor of Finance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
- Preparing and maintaining all Virginia Retirement System data and related records and files; preparing reports.
- Meets with all new hires, explains all benefits with the Virginia Retirement System, group life and optional life
- Responsible for meeting with all retirees and processing their retirement through the VRS software system.
- Maintaining group life and optional life for all eligible employees
- Works closely with payroll and maintains all VRS deductions in a timely manner
- Works closely with all employees and counsels them on their VRS benefits including their voluntary and mandatory deductions and their annuities related to Hybrid employees with VRS.
- Prepares all payroll records related to VRS and works with the VRS software and uploads all VRS records in a timely manner
- Prepares a variety of spreadsheets used for VRS verification
- Prepares complex computer reports used to project and analyze VRS expenditures and proposals
- Assists in analyzing and adjusting the general ledger as required
- Assists and prepares information for auditors
- Operates calculator, data processing and other standard office equipment incident to maintaining financial and related records
- Performs related tasks and any other financial or payroll tasks as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of the Virginia retirement system and benefit program administration; thorough knowledge of bookkeeping terminology and methods
- general knowledge of accounting theory and principles, and their application to the accounting transactions of the area assigned;
- general knowledge of standard office procedures, practices and equipment; skill in the use of computer equipment
- ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public
- ability to follow detailed and written instructions; ability to prepare complex financial records and reports.
- Demonstrated knowledge of complex spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Alio, etc.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by course work in bookkeeping and accounting
- considerable experience involving the maintenance of payroll and payroll records, financial and retirement records.
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, fingering, grasping and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
This position is considered essential and is required to work to ensure all deadlines are met when needed.
Terms of Employment
Salary Range: $43,347 - $66,057 (Grade 25)
Contract: 12 Months Employment
