Employment Period:  12 months
Employment Status:  Full-time
Start Date: July 1, 2021
Salary: Commensurate with experience

  • Administers the social studies program in accordance with Regulations and Virginia’s Standards of Accreditation
  • Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of curricular materials to include quarterly critical skills assessments for select grade levels/courses
  • Analyzes social studies assessment data and uses information to determine the effectiveness of instructional methods and programs and drive recommended revisions and improvements
  • Develops, implements, maintains, and evaluates professional development opportunities for staff and teachers
  • Visits schools and conducts walkthroughs on a regular basis to ensure consistency of the instructional program from classroom to classroom and school to school
  • Assists teachers by modeling lessons or coaching on an as needed basis
  • Supports school data teams and collaborates regarding instructional decisions based on the data
  • Assists in preparation, implementation, and assessment of technical assistance plans
  • Supervises and evaluates teacher specialists and clerical staff
  • Attends professional development activities to include workshops and conferences to expand professional skills
  • Oversees and maintains a fiscally responsible departmental budget
  • Coordinates and facilitates textbook adoption committees
  • Prepares and maintains textbooks and resource inventories
  • Coordinates meetings with specialists, instructional leaders, teachers, and administrators and disseminates information regarding current developments in the field
  • Coordinates division-wide social studies educational activities and events
  • Serves as the central office contact and liaison with parents and the community regarding the division’s social studies instructional program
  • Serves as division representative on a variety of committees
  • Prepares division reports as required
  • Prepares and presents to School Board upon request
  • Works in a collaborative manner with members of the HCS Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Team
  • Assists the human resources department with interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for social studies
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities


  • Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in Administration and Supervision PreK-12
  • Must hold an endorsement that permits a candidate to teach social sciences at any level
  • Must demonstrate the personal characteristics and leadership qualities necessary to work effectively with administrators, teachers, parents and students
  • Must have demonstrated success in improving student achievement
