Description

Responsible for providing leadership in the ongoing development and improvement of the Division’s PreK-12 instructional program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provides leadership in developing, understanding, and promoting the educational objectives of the Division

Responsible for the implementation of curriculum aligned with state frameworks, teacher and student performance objectives, and curriculum standards in all subject areas

Establishes a functioning curriculum-building program, in conjunction with supervisory staff, principals, and teachers

Establishes a program for the ongoing evaluation of instruction and curriculum

Serves as a resource person for principals in the development of individual school plans

Advises the Superintendent of instructional budgetary needs

Keeps abreast of, and interprets for the staff, current research in the area of curriculum development

Interprets the curriculum and its philosophical basis to the staff and the general public, and, at the request of the Superintendent, the School Board

Seeks ways and means of continually improving the supervisory services in the total school program

Provides leadership in planning professional development activities for instructional personnel

Evaluates and reviews the performance of instructional directors and coordinators

Assists in the selection and placement of principals, instructional directors, and coordinators

Exercises final approval for all requests for instructional materials

Coordinates the selection of textbooks and other instructional materials for the division

Studies and evaluates, and, as appropriate, recommends adoption of new materials, methods, and programs

Maintains liaison and active participation with educational leaders in curriculum and instruction at the state, regional, and national levels

Keeps abreast of new trends and developments in education

Participates in workshops, in-service activities, and meetings that contribute to professional competence

Responsible for the formulation, planning, and implementation of Federal grants

Oversees and supervises the Coordinator of Alternative and Adult Education programs and services

Plans, implements, and monitors district level professional development programs for teaching, management, and instructional educational support personnel

Facilitates counseling programs and services

Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Proven success record as a teacher, administrator, and/or instructional supervisor. Knowledge of the Virginia Continuous School Improvement Process. Thorough knowledge of PreK-12 school philosophy, instruction, and effective teaching practices. Considerable knowledge of and demonstrated abilities in the areas of planning, developing, implementing, assessing, evaluating, and monitoring PreK-12 instructional programs. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with teachers, principals, and division-level administrators, and the public.
