Description

Elementary Special Education Teacher

Position Purpose.  Perform duties within the compliance guidelines of IDEA and Middlesex County Public Schools.
 
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, provide specialized academic instruction to students with learning and developmental delays and other disabilities to facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students by planning, delivering and evaluating instruction based on specific standards and objectives as indicated in each student’s Individualized Educational Plan (IEP); maintain legal compliance with IDEA and Federal regulations.  Contacts are made within and outside of the school system.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Apply knowledge of curriculum and specialized instructional strategies to improve student performance with regard to standard based and criterion based assessments.
  • Plan and deliver appropriate curriculum using district curriculum and individualized educational plan for students with disabilities.  Assess student’s learning on an ongoing basis and alter instruction to meet group and individual needs.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Administer standardized tests in accordance with District testing programs and special education eligibility.
  • Consult with teachers, administrators and instructional and health specialists to determine individual student eligibility and classroom placement and to evaluate student progress.  Observe students in natural learning environments.  Coordinate with other school and community resources in delivery of services.  Document and evaluate student progress and communicate progress with parents.
  • Develop Individualized Education Plans, Functional Behavioral Assessments, Behavior Intervention Plans and eligibility determination within IDEA and Federal guidelines
  • Instruct students in the principles of responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of the Middlesex County Public Schools.
  • Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
  • Supervise students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation.
Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles for special education students.
  • Ability to identify students appropriate for special education programs
  • Ability to develop instructional goals for students within special education programs
  • Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Work in community, home and school building environments. This position also entails significant walking, bending, stooping and possible physical interventions in order to maintain a safe learning environment. 

 Qualifications Profile
  • Certification/License: Elementary Special Education
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • Virginia State Certification in the appropriate grade level preferred but not required.
Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Special Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
Experience
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels a plus.
