Special Education Teacher
Ayres Elementary School
Full-time, 163 scheduled working days (172 paid days), 4-day school week (Tuesday-Friday), 8.5 hours/day
 

Job Goal:
The special education teacher creates a learning environment that inspires personal growth; communicates effectively with colleagues and other members of the team; develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with learning disabilities; evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives; follows State mandated due-process procedures; and functions as IEP manager to assigned students.
Essential Functions:  Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Inspire wonder and joy for learning and build appropriate relationships for life-long learning.

  2. Provide research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP.

  3. In cooperation with classroom teachers, assess student progress and determine the needs for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.  

  4. Provide a positive learning environment and employ various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.  

  5. Develop and implement annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education services required to meet those goals.  

  6. Work cooperatively with support team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.  

  7. Coordinate the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.  

  8. Create a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using appropriate sources.

  9. In cooperation with the support team, conduct special education evaluations and reevaluations.

  10. Provide direction, supervision and evaluation of paraprofessionals as directed.  

  11. Comply with School Board policies and all state and federal rules and regulations.  

  12. Complete all district and state reporting requirements.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  1. Shall possess the necessary license required by the Colorado Department of Education or be endorsed in the appropriate areas accepted by the Colorado Department of Education.
  2. Continued professional development in Special Education and related areas of study.
  3. Participate in all professional growth opportunities offered by the district.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position supervises classroom Paraeducators.
Essential Functions:  Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Position is responsible for support staff and classroom management including students with a wide range of academic needs and abilities to quickly adapt for maintaining positive classroom environment. Work environment may fluctuate between high-paced and quiet moments requiring the teacher to maintain calm, caring demeanor.  Physical requirements could include lifting up to 50 lbs., frequently walking through classroom and frequent interruptions.

Sterling is located in Logan County in the Northeastern corner of Colorado on Interstate 76 alongside the Platte River. Having the largest population, approximately 13,900, in Logan County and much of the surrounding area, Sterling offers shopping, restaurants, numerous parks, a recreation center, access to medical care and is located near North Sterling Reservoir. Sterling is approximately 1 1/2 hours from Denver International Airport and 2 hours from Denver and the front range (I-25 corridor).
 
RE-1 Valley School District has two high schools, one middle school, one junior high school, three elementary schools and two preschools and serves approximately 2,200 students in the Sterling and Iliff/Crook areas, employing about 500 staff. RE-1 Valley School District utilizes a 4-day school week schedule (Tuesday-Friday).
