PAYROLL SPECIALIST
Hiring Pay Range: $16.38 - $17.39 per hour, DOE
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm
40 hours/week, 12 months/262 paid work days per year
Location: Murphey Administration Center

Target Start Date: ASAP
 
Definition:           
Under immediate supervision of the Director of Finance performs payroll bookkeeping work of moderate difficulty.
 
Essential Functions:

Tasks:

  • Compile, prepare, process and generate biweekly district payroll in accordance with district policies and federal and state requirements
  • Reconcile and verify employee time entered into Time Clock 
  • Request any necessary payroll documentation from the school sites
  • Process approved leave changes, pay rate changes, stipends, new hires, terminations, withholding changes, direct deposits, and enter into the payroll accounting system
  • Verify employee benefit deductions with Human Resources
  • Enter and maintain a variety of employee payroll deductions using manual and automated systems
  • File employee payroll deductions, benefits information and periodic reports
  • Prepare and transmit mandated governmental payroll reports and payments, including FICA, income tax withholding, Arizona State Retirement System, as well as other employee benefit-related payments
  • Submit payroll file to the county
  • Submit direct deposit information to Wells Fargo
  • Prepare payroll and benefit checks for deposit
  • Maintain payroll files located in the payroll office, as well as the district warehouse.\

Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of payroll bookkeeping, including FLSA definitions, federal and state income tax withholding and voluntary and mandated benefits deductions
  • Knowledge of manual and automated payroll systems
  • Knowledge of office practices, procedures and systems
  • Skill in using basic arithmetic
  • Skill in performing accurate data entry and ten-key
  • Skill in proofing and verifying detailed work
  • Skill in organizing and prioritizing payroll work and meeting established deadlines
  • Skill in handling confidential information
  • Skill in communicating effectively, orally and in writing
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff and administrators
 
Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or GED
  • 3 years of experience processing and maintaining automated payroll in a centralized payroll department for a group of at least one hundred employees
