Steamboat Springs School District (SSSD) is seeking an exceptional school leader for a dynamic high school located in one of Colorado’s premier mountain towns in a school district with a reputation for excellent student performance and making extraordinary gains toward closing the achievement gap.  SSSD is committed to ensuring it has the right leader for Steamboat Springs High School; someone who drives student performance and is committed to cultivating a healthy environment where students, educators, and staff flourish.  

 The SSHS principal must champion a school culture that prioritizes empowerment of all stakeholders, builds trust and ensures that students, educators, and staff feel safe, supported, respected, and valued in their environment. Specifically, qualified candidates will demonstrate an ability to:

              Invest in people and build relationships through kindness, caring, and acceptance
             Celebrate, recognize, and promote a school community
             Create/promote a consistent, shared school vision 
             Be accountable and hold staff and students accountable for delivering on commitments and taking responsibility for outcomes
             Shape strategy as a member of the SSSD administration team, working with administrative colleagues to serve the greater good and                  help the district evolve to meet the current and future needs of the community 
             Align school programming and priorities to larger community’s needs
             Develop strong community connections and know, affirm, and partner with a variety of community members and organizations

The position will start in August 2020 for the 2020-2021 school year.  This position will work a 215 work day contract and includes excellent benefits.  Pay will be dependent upon experience.   Entry range; $106,557.00-$119,344.00

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervises the development of the educational program at the high school level and coordinates the program(s) with the other levels to create an effective, coherent K-12 curriculum; submits any suggested curricular changes to the Director of Teaching and Learning for review and approval by the Superintendent.

  • Works cooperatively with the staff for the best interest of all students: organizes the total school program, plans staff meetings, appoints committees, and assigns teachers to their various duties within limits of Board and Administrative policy.

  • Serves as the instructional leader for the high school.  Be accountable and hold staff and students accountable for delivering on commitments and taking responsibility for outcomes   

  • Coordinates the efforts of teachers, parents and special team members in working with students in meeting individual needs.

  •  Provides for an educational environment that permits and encourages creativity in the learning process. Uses data to assess student growth and school improvement.

  •  Shape strategy as a member of the SSSD administration team, working with administrative colleagues to serve the greater good and help the district evolve to meet the current and future needs of the community 

  • Coordinates with the Director of Exceptional Student Services to insure proper placement and support for students with special needs.

  • Supervises Special Education Programs in cooperation with the  Director of Exceptional Student Services,  work with NW BOCES providers as needed.

  •  Approves all modifications to standard educational programs for individual students.

  •  Supervises the registration, classification, evaluation and progress reports of students.

  •  Maintains good public relations with the community through parent groups, press releases, newsletters and community projects. Works with the Parent Information Committee (PIC).  Align school programming and priorities to larger community’s needs.  Develop strong community connections and know, affirm, and partner with a variety of community members and organizations.

  • Through strong leadership skills, is able to invest in people and build trusting relationships, celebrate, recognize, and promote a school community.

  • Vision to create/promote a consistent, shared school vision

  • Handles in a cordial manner, complaints affecting the school, working toward resolution and reports to the Superintendent any matter of a serious nature, especially those matters not satisfactorily settled.

  • Provides building specific orientation and assists in the district orientation and training of teachers.

  • Work with HR for the recruitment of staff, review of applications and selection of candidates for interview.

  • Provides continued coaching and input regarding performance expectations for staff including educational; practices, district curriculum standards, working with colleagues creating a positive work environment, works with teachers to improve instructional techniques, etc

  • Responsible for the evaluation of staff according to established criteria and district policy, makes recommendations to the Superintendent for selection, continued employment, dismissal of personnel under his/her direction.

  • Conducts a continuous program of supervision of classroom instruction to insure implementation of the district curriculum; and makes recommendations for in-service training for teachers in the building.

  • Coordinates and monitors schedules for all subject areas, and all activities to insure implementation of district curriculum.

  • Reviews and submits for approval all requests by staff to attend meetings or functions, which necessitate absence from school. Understands and adheres to staff ALD use policies.Ensures staff requests are completed/submitted for payroll processing. Responsible for time clock management and approval of classified staff time

  • Reviews district-wide budgetary processes and coordinates the preparation of the budgets for the high school.

  • Determines staff assignments within the district policy and staffing guidelines

  • Establishes an appropriate accounting system for all funds handled through the school office and makes periodic reports as requested by the Director of  Finance.

  • Supervises the custodians in their daily care and maintenance of the building.

  • Develops school procedures and programs to ensure a safe learning environment. Understands and provides staff training and adheres to Title IX, mandatory reporting and other District student guidelines.

  • Responsible for general student discipline of the school, shall have authority to suspend students as provided by the laws of the State of Colorado; such suspensions should be reported immediately to the Superintendent

  • Will collaborate with Yampa Valley High School administration

  • Implements district policy and procedures, and interprets policy and procedures for building personnel and students.

  • Responsible for securing substitute teachers from an approved list.

  • Exercises decisive leadership in crisis situations.

  • Remains current about changes and developments in the field of education.

  • Works with the Directors of Technology and Teaching and Learning to evaluate curricular and co-curricular programs

  • Participates in the Leadership Team, Administrative Team and Curriculum and Instruction meetings.

  • Provides leadership for the implementation of the district-wide strategic plan.

  • Provide leadership and direction for the development and implementation of the building level improvement plan that aligns to the district-wide strategic plan.

  • Provides counsel and advice to the Superintendent. Submits reports to the Superintendent and district office as requested.

  • Other duties as assigned

 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • TeachersSchool Nurse, Paraprofessional staff
    Secretaries, Counselors, Custodians

QUALIFICATIONS:

     Possesses or is eligible for a Colorado Type D Administrator Certificate or Administrator License.
     Minimum of 4 years principal experience, preferably at secondary level
     Minimum of five years of successful experience as a teacher.
     Demonstrated leadership  skills that improve school culture, student engagement and growth
     Knowledge and experience in curriculum development and implementing effective instructional strategies.
     Knowledge and experience with school business and finance.
     Trained in personnel supervision and performance evaluation.
     Possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 Decision Making: An example of a typical decision made by an individual in this position is to interpret policies/procedures and best practice. An incorrect decision made by this position could impact the district legally causing financial condition of the district to be affected. Errors made in decision-making could potentially result in substantial cost to the District or damage the credibility of the District.

 Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond professionally to questions from groups of parents, community members, commissions, colleagues and Board of Education.

 Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as interest, discounts, commissions, proportions, percentage, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, and geometry.

 Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form, and deal with several abstract concrete variables. Ability to analyze and use data to supervise the delivery of instruction and the school improvement process.

 Technology Skills: Proficient use of technology which includes: basic operations and concepts, word processing, spread sheets, internet usage, critical evaluation of information, data analysis, email, integration of technology.

 Other Skills And Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in education. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to copy, coordinate, instruct, evaluate and negotiate. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to discipline students consistent with district procedures. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
