Purpose Statement:

The Alexandria City Public Schools seeks a dynamic and strategic leader to serve as its first Head of School. The Head of School executes the school’s vision; establishes and maintains the school philosophy; leads and manages the school to achieve daily instructional program excellence; and leads the school improvement planning process ensuring alignment with the school division’s strategic plan and best practices. This job reports to the Chief of Teaching, Learning & Leadership (formerly Chief Academic Officer) under the Department of Teaching, Learning and Leadership.

School History:

Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School is Alexandria's first school serving students in pre-k through eighth grade. It is also an International Baccalaureate® (IB) school for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP). The IB programme focus develops the whole child so that the student acquires the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn, and work in a technology-driven, rapidly globalizing world of inter-connectedness across space and time. See more information about the school on the Jefferson-Houston website.

The school is making gains to close the achievement gaps in English and Mathematics. In the 2019-20 school year, Jefferson-Houston was accredited for the first time since 2008. For specific information about the school academic performance, please review the Virginia School Quality Profile for recent test scores.

Starting in the 2020-21 school year, the school seeks its first-ever Transformational Head of School. This dynamic school administrator will lead change with a highly-positive approach for continuous improvement. The Head of School must have a proven track record of instructional leadership including evidence of making significant academic achievement gains, maintaining high staff morale, and using a systems-thinking approach to drive instructional programming. Relative to other schools, this school leader must be acclimated to a highly-visible, highly intense, and high-accountability work environment within an ethnically-diverse, culturally-diverse and economically-diverse student population. This is an historic opportunity for the right leader to create a possible national model of IB academic excellence.

The Transformational Head of School should consider a five- year commitment to transform the school to a high-performing instructional model of excellence. The position is placed on the equivalent salary-grade level of a middle school principal to acknowledge the demands of the role. Additionally, an annual stipend of $10,000 will be awarded based upon meeting objectives consistent with completion of transformational leadership functions, the achievement of academic progress goals and school accreditation.

The ACPS Family of Schools:
