Credentials: American Occupational Therapy Certification (AOTCB)
and licensed by the State of Oklahoma Education: B.S. in Occupational Therapy
Training or Experience Required: Prefer one or more years experience in a public school or other pediatric setting.
Special Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: Good knowledge of normal and abnormal development and therapeutic techniques.
Reports To: Director of Special Services
Job Goal (Purpose of Position): Performs supervisory and professional level duties under minimal supervision to improve or maintain the student's level of physical/motor functioning to facilitate optimal learning through the identification of problems, evaluation and treatment programs. Identifies, evaluates and executes an educationally therapeutic occupational therapy program.
Contact with Others: An incumbent in this position has regular contact by telephone or in-person with members of the staff, medical community, and public to determine actual information needed. Job requires interpreting and translating facts and information, explaining situations and issues to persons and advising them of alternative courses of action. The job requires tact and diplomacy and independent judgment such as problem solving; making formal presentations; interpreting policies and procedures based on experience; providing counseling, negotiations, or mediation techniques as appropriate. A supervisor is generally not available to handle irate/difficult persons.
Other Performance Measures:
Successful performance of the job requires good customer service/people skills to work with the school, families of students and medical professionals. It requires following safety guidelines and policies in order that students and others including self are protected from accident or injury. It requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns. Creativity, initiative and effective problem solving is critical to the success of the position.
Essential Job Functions: 1. Assist in the identification and initial referral of disabled children. Performs
screening for possible occupational therapy (OT) referral. 2. Carries out assessment and evaluation procedures for disabled students. 3. Makes recommendation for intervention and acts as an IEP team member.
4. Directs OT services, which involves direct and indirect treatment. 5. Coordinates the information flow from the department to other appropriate
service providers. 6. Supervises, consults and instructs school personnel and parents in therapeutic management of students. Provides formal and informal in-service to administrators, parents, and teachers regarding programs associated with OT. 7. Consults with physicians, hospitals, and other medical personnel regarding the needs of the disabled children. Receives and interprets physician's confidential records of OT service, documents evaluations, interventions, progress, home programs, and program needs and changes for individual students. 8. Maintains confidential records of OT service. Documents evaluation,
interventions, progress, home programs and program needs and changes for individual students. 9. Provides/directs clinical instruction to subordinates, students and performs
supervision over O/T aides and assistants. 10. Travels to various sites as needed to provide OT services. 11. Attends necessary workshops and continuing education to maintain certification
and adheres to the standards of ethics according to Public Law 101-476. 12. Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision exercised: An incumbent supervises other OT aides and assistants.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions: In a workday, the employee performs frequent bending/stooping; squatting/crouching; crawling/kneeling; and pushing and pulling. Employee's job requires frequent carrying/lifting of up to 50 pounds to transfer and carry equipment for treatment sessions to various sites. Must be able to safely transfer and stabilize students during therapy.
Employee must possess manual dexterity/visual ability to operate vehicle and other equipment/machines effectively. Employee must possess hearing/speaking ability to communicate with staff, patients, etc. Employee must use due concern to prevent the spread of infection due to equipment and physical therapies.
