Description

The 2019 Middle School Remedial Summer School Program will be held at King's Fork Middle School.  The summer program would be offered on site to approximately 500 middle school students at 18/1 pupil-teacher ratio.  Summer program staff would include one counselor, twenty-four (24) teachers and twenty paraprofessionals (20).  Additionally, students who have successfully completed the courses of English and mathematics, but have not mastered their local or state assessments will be offered virtual service through an online program.

The program will commence on Monday, July 1, 2019 and end on Thursday, August 1, 2019 for students and June 26, 2019 through August 1, 2019 for the summer program staff.  Summer School will not be held on Fridays nor July 4, 2019.  summer school will incorporate a thematic approach to include the following:

  • Week 1 - Learning on the Move
  • Week 2 - Engineering
  • Week 3 - Biomedical
  • Week 4 - community Awareness

Student hours would be from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM.  Teacher hours would be from 7:40 AM to 12:40 PM.  On June 26, June 27 and each Thursday, teacher hours will be extended to 2:00 PM to plan for the program and transition to the new theme each week.

RATE OF PAY:
Teachers:  $31.50 per hour
Guidance counselor:  $31.50 per hour
Nurse:  $26.40 per hour
Teacher Assistant:  $12.70 per hour
 

Essential Functions

  • Develops and administers education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
  • Maintains familiarity with district and State standardized tests for the purpose of adapting curriculum to maximize student achievement on such tests.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, spelling, literature and other content areas taught.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Works in standard office and school building environments.
 
Certification/License:

  • Must hold or be eligible for appropriate Virginia Certification..
Education:
  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
Experience:
Successful prior teaching experiences is a plus.
