Special Education Teacher

Nature and Scope of Job

This person will provide direct instruction to students, plan for and monitor the effectiveness of “inclusive practices”, act as an “interventionist expert” and work closely with colleagues to develop comprehensive and effective instructional systems throughout the school. 

Education and Experience

  • BA/BS or MA/MS in Special Education
  • 2 years teaching experience preferred
  • Knowledge of and commitment to Core Knowledge curriculum
  • Knowledge of and commitment to Character Education
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively solving challenging problems through positive behavioral support

  • Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of current special education legal requirements
  • Will be responsible for teaching one section of middle school pre-algebra
  • Must possess a thorough understanding of the RTI process
  • Familiarity or experience with Core Knowledge curriculum preferred
  • Basic familiarity with Colorado State Standards required
  • Expertise in a variety of models of teaching
  • Expertise in a variety of strategies for different learning styles
  • Must be well versed in the principles of “backwards design” lesson planning and goal setting
  • Must be able to draft specific and measurable goals and objectives for the IEP
  • Must have knowledge of a wide range of assessment tools to be used for diagnostic purposes
  • Must be able to develop specific goals and objectives based on assessment information and team discussion
  • Must be able to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects
  • Must have effective systems for tracking student progress
  • Must be well versed in direct instruction as well as inclusive practices
  • Must be able to work collaboratively with team members in sharing and analyzing data
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with students and parents (student data & shared concerns) 
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel programs
  • Must be well organized and keep good records

  • Knowledge of behavior and classroom management techniques

  • Ability to be part of and work with a team
