Title:  Custodian

Position Purpose
Breckenridge is looking for someone who wants to be part of our outstanding custodial team. Under the direct supervision of the Head Custodian and Facilities Manager, employee is responsible for daily cleaning of building and grounds, and equipment maintenance to ensure a safe environment for students, staff and visitors.  Because of upcoming retirements in the future, there is room for advancement.

Hours of Work
  • Full Time - Year round
  • School year: 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM
  • Summer Hours: 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM
  • Will include occasional weekend hours

Essential Functions:
  • Inspects building in morning, opens entrance doors, turns on lights, checks boilers for proper operation, records boiler readings, checks water gauges and pumps.
  • Cleans classrooms, common areas, cafeteria, kitchen. Vacuums and sweeps hallways.
  • Sets up tables in common areas, take down tables after lunch, set up tables and chairs and sound system for daily events.
  • Keep grounds neat in appearance, free from weeds and trash. Remove snow  from sidewalks, parking lots, and from door entrances to maintain a safe  walking environment.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly receiving room and garage.
  • Compact garbage, remove trash from building along with daily recycling of  cardboard and paper. Laundering of towels, mop heads, and dust mops for  daily use.
  • Light maintenance on all tractors used for snow removal and mowing and all other  equipment used for outside tasks. Maintain equipment used for custodial duties, i.e.: vacuums, floor scrubber, carpet cleaner.
  • Monitor hallways, bathrooms, be on call for classroom, bathroom and common areas for emergency cleanups.
  • Any or all other duties as assigned.

Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mower and hand tools.

Safety Requirements
Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties.
Wears appropriate safety gear, including masks.
Must comply with school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets.

Travel Requirements
Travel between schools occasionally.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal and others.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems as needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Ability to work above ground from ladders and automatic lifts.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.
Qualifiications Profile
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Boilers License or willingness to get one
  • Current Class D Driver's license required
  • CDL License with school bus endorsement or ability to obtain license would be beneficial
